Kite Foundation successfully intercepted the attack but did not cause token loss.
Kite Foundation announced on the X platform on August 6 that it successfully detected and blocked an attack on KITE tokens on the Ethereum main network and confirmed that no tokens were stolen. For a project that ranked among the top 100 in market value in early 2026 with one of a handful of new tokens, this incident has undoubtedly become an unpleasant episode in this eventful summer. Today, KITE has joined the expanding list, along with DeFi protocols such as Boltz, AQUA, and ZEUS that have been detected or have suffered funding withdrawn in the past two weeks.
The main network alarm sounded, but no damage was caused.
According to the foundation's announcement on the X platform, its security monitoring system detected abnormal KITE transfer activity on the Ethereum main network, and immediately triggered an alarm and successfully intercepted the attack before any tokens were transferred. "The attack was discovered in time and immediately controlled, and no tokens were lost," the foundation wrote. Kite AI is running a real-time vulnerability bounty program on the Sherlock platform starting July 20, offering rewards of up to 10,000 USDC for reporting vulnerabilities. The platform's token page also showed its CertiK security rating of 4.2, indicating that the project had a sound audit infrastructure in place before this week's alert was released.
KITE fell from the top 100 in market value to two-thirds of its value
In February this year, the Kite Foundation announced that KITE's market value had exceeded US$363 million, with a fully diluted valuation reaching US$2 billion, making it one of the 100 largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. Soon after, KITE ranked seventh in the 24-hour spot trading volume ranking of Upbit, South Korea's largest exchange, with KITE/KRW trading pairs accounting for approximately 2.3% to 2.5% of the exchange's total trading volume. However, the situation of the token has changed since then. According to CoinMarketCap, KITE currently trades at approximately $0.104 and has a market value of more than $187 million. This is more than 67% lower than its all-time high of $0.3212 set on March 6, and it currently ranks 123rd among the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalisation. As word spread, its trading volume soared nearly 195% to about $60 million in 24 hours. In a weak market environment, the token has outperformed many of its peers, but it is no longer the top 100 name it had in February.
Similar attacks have occurred frequently recently. How should the attackers act?
Boltz suspended redemption services on August 3 after discovering that AI-assisted attackers were iteratively exploiting the vulnerability faster than the team could patch it. The attack then spread to other Lightning Internet service providers, and on the same day AQUA Wallet also reported a redemption outage on its platform. On August 5, Lightning Internet wallet provider ZEUS took its infrastructure offline for a security audit. All three platforms stated that customer funds are safe. DefiLlama's hacker database shows that the total value of stolen goods in the cryptocurrency space is approximately $16.9 billion. The database also lists a $115 million loss related to Coldcard on July 31, one of a series of attacks in late July. Yan Pritzker, Swan co-founder and CTO, shared his thoughts on Boltz's attack on platform X: "It's a sad day. AI attackers are becoming more complex, and it will be difficult for small teams to keep up with attacks." He added that in the era of big-language models, the cost of maintaining enterprise-level security will force many innovative startups that want to process customer money to exit the market. Research by a16z Crypto found that when off-the-shelf AI agents were provided with structured attack knowledge, their chances of successfully exploiting known vulnerabilities increased from 10% to 70%, a sevenfold increase.
Kite's positioning and response
Kite claims to be the first AI payment blockchain infrastructure designed to allow autonomous AI agents to conduct transactions through verifiable identity, programmable governance, and native stablecoin access. As more and more AI attacks target various platforms-including those proxy economic platforms that assume machines can transfer funds without human intervention-Kite's rapid response and effective control this time will play an important role in restoring confidence.
