Abstract
Kenya's Nairobi Stock Exchange is developing East Africa's first artificial intelligence-focused exchange-traded fund, aiming to provide investors with a channel to invest in global technology companies through the local market.
The ETF will be denominated in Kenyan shilling to reduce exchange rate risk, while also tracking leading artificial intelligence companies for domestic investors to participate. Exchange officials also plan to launch cryptocurrency ETFs covering Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana to drive market growth and investor diversification.
Kenya Nairobi Stock Exchange develops East Africa's first AI-themed ETF
Kenya Nairobi Stock Exchange is developing East Africa's first artificial intelligence-focused exchange-traded fund to expand opportunities for investors seeking to invest in global AI companies. According to NSE CEO Frank Mviti, the proposed fund will track companies directly involved in the artificial intelligence business rather than a broad technology index.
Mviti explained that when designing the fund, the exchange referred to global AI leaders including Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI. The ETF aims to allow investors to invest in companies that are leading the development of artificial intelligence through products listed on local exchanges.
In addition to attracting technology-based investors, NSE also hopes to keep more investment capital in Kenya. As a result, the exchange expects the product to provide a local alternative for investors seeking to invest in international technology companies.
In addition, the ETF will be denominated in Kenyan shillings, a structure that helps reduce foreign currency risk while allowing investors to participate in the performance of global AI companies.
AI ETF expands exchange's investment product line
However, Mviti pointed out that the exchange will continue to evaluate market conditions before confirming the launch timetable. According to him, concerns about the valuation of artificial intelligence companies remain a factor in the final decision. Therefore, if market conditions change, the exchange may adjust its launch plan.
In addition, NSE is expanding its business beyond artificial intelligence investment products. Mviti said the exchange is also evaluating a cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund that will provide exposure to Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana. The proposal will not be approved until Kenya introduces regulations related to virtual assets.
In addition to expanding its investment product line, the exchange also expects stronger market performance to support its broader growth strategy. Stable economic conditions and improving corporate profits have boosted confidence in Kenya's stock market.
It is worth noting that NSE expects its total market value to reach Kenyan Shillings 5 trillion by the end of 2026. Exchange officials believe innovative exchange-traded funds can attract young investors while expanding participation in domestic capital markets.
Conclusion
The proposed exchange-traded fund focusing on artificial intelligence highlights the Nairobi Stock Exchange's efforts to diversify investment opportunities through locally listed products. The plan, along with plans for cryptocurrency ETFs, reflects the exchange's broader strategy to expand its product line while simultaneously responding to changes in investor preferences and the development of Kenya's financial markets.
