Robinhood Chain wants to become a financial center, serving both professionals and cryptocurrency enthusiasts.
This is basically what Robinhood CEO Vlad Teneve meant by posting the "Two Wolves" post on Platform X. John Kerblatt, head of the company's cryptocurrency business, said the post outlined Robinhood's goal in launching its own Ethereum Layer-2 network-balancing serious products such as tokenized stocks and derivative contracts with memes that attract attention, fun and users.
"We want to show customers that we care about what they care about," Keblatt said."We want to make sure the chain serves what people really care about."
And this attempt has already gotten off to a hot start. Keblatt said that in just over a month since its launch, Robinhood Chain's total value of locked positions has reached nearly US$800 million and has processed more than 200 million transactions.
Keblatt, who is responsible for Robinhood's cryptocurrency and international business, pointed out that the company chose the Ethereum Layer-2 rather than the Layer-1 blockchain in order to be able to rely on existing security and decentralization features while focusing resources on product development. He used the chain's deposit volume and transaction volume as a measure of early adoption.
"We also value developer activity, which is very important to me," he said."I don't want this chain to be just Robinhood's chain, but a chain that anyone can use and interact with our products, like our stock tokens, and everything else we're building."
The Robinhood Chain Network is part of Robinhood's plan to bring brokerage products into the chain. It allows customers to buy and sell real-world assets (approximately 200 tokenized stocks), lend stablecoins, and trade perpetual contracts.
Keblatt said that trading can still be freely traded when traditional markets are closed, allowing retail investors to respond to news that affects the market even after traditional exchanges are closed. "The world doesn't stop on weekends," he said."The news often comes after the close of trading on Friday, and people want to be able to hedge their positions, something that only recently retail investors have really been able to do."
In addition to tokenized stocks, loans and other financial products, Kerblatt said Robinhood is also making room for meme coins. He described meme coins as an important source of liquidity and user interest for the new network. "We believe meme is an important part of cryptocurrency. For new chains like Robinhood Chain, these tokens have value. They bring liquidity and attract customer interest, especially DeFi-type customers who are difficult to pry,"Keblatt said." If meme is something they are extremely interested in, we want to make sure the chain supports it."
Ultimately, Kerblatt said Robinhood's goal is to reach people who have never used cryptocurrency, rather than competing with rival blockchains for existing users. "If we see tens of millions of customers trying to use the chain, that will be a huge victory for us," he said."We hope to bring more customers on the chain and show them the advantages of this technology."
