Former Ripple executive Matt Hamilton recently criticized a proposal to significantly expand the Memo field of XRP ledger transactions to store larger files. The proposal plans to increase the current Memo limit of 1KB to approximately 1.3 MB, or expand it approximately 1200 times. Proponents believe this change could allow developers and users to interact with XRPL beyond traditional financial transactions.
According to XRPL Foundation contributor Vet, the expanded Memo field will allow users to directly embed multiple types of files in transactions, including images, PDF documents, music clips, Short Video, source code, and compressed packages. Proponents argue that network participants should have greater freedom to decide how to use available ledger space. Under this thinking, users who are willing to pay corresponding transaction costs will be able to store more information.
