Robinhood launches cryptocurrency trading service in the UK
Robinhood this week began allowing eligible UK users to buy and sell more than 50 cryptocurrencies within its main investment app. Deals are routed through Bitstamp-the exchange Robinhood acquired last year for $200 million. British retail investors have previously been able to trade stocks, ISAs, options and futures through the platform.
Zero trading commissions, but foreign exchange fees still apply
Robinhood offers zero trading commissions, free account management fees and custody fees. However, users need to pay a currency exchange fee. British users are required to pay a foreign exchange fee of 0.1%, which rises to 0.3% on some weekend exchanges. Cryptocurrencies on the shelves include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple and Hyperliquid.
Jordan Sinclair, President of Robinhood UK Ltd and General Manager of Bitstamp UK Ltd., said: "A new generation of British investors view digital assets as an important part of a diversified investment portfolio." He added that the launch was "another major step in Robinhood's becoming a one-stop investment platform in the UK."
Bitstamp UK has been registered as a crypto asset service provider recognized by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). However, cryptocurrencies deposited in Bitstamp UK are not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Plan or the Financial Ombudsman service, so regular consumer protection measures will not apply.
Robinhood's British subsidiary was included in the FCA's Crypto-Asset Company Registration List on July 31, confirming that it complies with regulators 'anti-money laundering regulations. There are currently more than 50 companies on the list, including Kraken, Ripple, BlackRock and Revolut.
Cryptocurrency revenue declines, predicting market growth against the trend
Robinhood also launched the "Cortex Digests for Crypto" feature in the UK. The generative AI tool interprets breaking news, market data and technical indicators to explain why specific asset prices change.
Robinhood Chain was launched on the main network on July 1 after being tested in February. This is a permissionless Layer 2 solution based on Arbitrum. Robinhood said the chain has processed more than $18 billion in decentralized exchange (DEX) transactions since its launch, with a total locked value of more than $840 million. CEO Vlad Tenev said that this is the fastest Ethereum virtual machine compatible chain to reach 100 million transactions.
According to the financial report released on July 29, Robinhood's cryptocurrency trading revenue in the second quarter was US$100 million, a year-on-year decrease of 38%. During the same period, forecast market revenue reached US$156 million, surpassing cryptocurrencies for the first time. Total net income increased 32% year-on-year to US$1.31 billion. Net income was US$573 million, a 48% increase from the second quarter of 2025. "We achieved record revenue and set new highs in stock, options and event contract trading volume," Chief Financial Officer Shiv Verma said at the time.
Just three months after acquiring Bitstamp, the exchange's cryptocurrency trading volume has exceeded Robinhood's own apps-reaching $14.4 billion in August, compared with Robinhood's $13.7 billion.
