The New York Stock Exchange is developing an on-chain settlement infrastructure to support tokenization and native digital securities in future markets
The exchange participated in a U.S. Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation's tokenization pilot project in July, and is also exploring blockchain-based settlement and on-chain payment systems.
The New York Stock Exchange plans to extend trading hours later this year and advance in parallel with blockchain-related work. It is expected to achieve 23-hour trading starting in December.
New York Stock Exchange President Lynn Martin said on August 10 that the exchange is developing an on-chain settlement platform for tokenized securities. Martin made the remarks at a capital markets seminar in Seoul, during which she discussed blockchain settlement and market infrastructure. The New York Stock Exchange also participated in the tokenization pilot project of the American Depository, Trust and Clearing Corporation in July.
The NYSE plans to implement on-chain clearing of securities
Martin said that the NYSE is developing infrastructure for on-chain clearing of tokenized securities. The project will explore how blockchain technology can support future global financial markets. The exchange plans to combine its existing market infrastructure with blockchain-based settlements.
The information provided bydoes not clarify which blockchain networks are involved. According to Martin, the New York Stock Exchange is also studying how tokenization and on-chain payments can support market infrastructure. She described the work as part of connecting traditional finance with decentralized finance.
The New York Stock Exchange is part of the Intercontinental Exchange, which is working with the New York Stock Exchange to develop the platform. The project aims to support tokenized versions of traditional securities as well as native digital securities.
NYSE participates in the American Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation tokenization pilot
Martin said that the NYSE participated in the American Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation tokenization pilot project in July. The pilot studied how to operate securities using tokenized infrastructure. The participation comes as the New York Stock Exchange explores blockchain-based settlements for its own market infrastructure.
However, the exchange has not provided a confirmed launch date for the platform. Martin also discussed the exchange's broader technological infrastructure during his speech in Seoul. She said the New York Stock Exchange recorded trading volume of 3.6 billion shares in its closing bid on March 20.
On the same day, the nominal trading volume of the exchange also reached US$231 billion. Martin attributed the system's performance to continued investment in market technology.
NYSE explores broader market technology changes
Martin said the NYSE plans to launch extended trading hours later this year. She said the exchange has received approval from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and will gradually move towards trading 23 hours a day, five days a week. The plan is expected to begin implementation in December.
At the same time, South Korea adjusted its Korean Won/U.S. dollar foreign exchange market to 24-hour trading on July 6. Martin said technology is changing trading, risk pricing, liquidity and capital acquisition. She also pointed out that the NYSE hopes future infrastructure will remain safe, stable, scalable and compliant.
As a result, the exchange's tokenization efforts are proceeding in parallel with broader changes in trading hours and blockchain settlement.
