Stellar ready for major network upgrade: Adapter (Protocol 28)
Stellar is about to welcome a major network upgrade called Adapter (Protocol 28), which is designed to achieve faster consensus speeds and more powerful smart contract capabilities. The Stellar Development Foundation, which maintains the Stellar network, outlined the planned improvements and announced a detailed deployment timetable for the next few weeks.
Key changes in the Adapter upgrade
The Adapter contains three core protocol changes designed to optimize network performance. Two of the changes, CAP-85 and CAP-86, focus on streamlining the developer's build process on Stellar smart contract platform Soroban. With these enhancements, developers can more efficiently upgrade and extend smart contracts, reduce the number of independent contracts that need to be deployed, and perform upgrades in a more secure atomic way.
In addition, contracts can evolve their data structures during the migration process without disrupting functionality. These features are designed to minimize disruption and effectively manage changing requirements in actual project development.
The third protocol improvement CAP-83 is aimed at the consensus process of the network. By enhancing verifiers 'ability to maintain consensus even when transaction data spreads slowly, this change helps Stellar cope with growing network activity and achieve effective expansion.
Small Dictionary: Soroban - Soroban is Stellar's native smart contract platform designed to support the construction of more complex decentralized applications on the web. It allows developers to write flexible and extensible smart contracts using modern programming languages.
With the atomic upgrade feature enabled by CAP-85, developers who deploy contract clusters that share the same code can simplify the update process and apply changes to the entire cluster at once, rather than updating each contract one by one.
Upgrade timeline and implementation
The launch of the Adapter will begin with the release of a stable version of its core components, that is, August 13. Between August 13 and August 21, supporting infrastructure and SDK updates will be released to ensure ecosystem compatibility.
Testnet voting will be held at 17:00 UTC on August 27 to determine whether the upgraded protocol will be enabled in the test environment. If the activation of the test network goes smoothly, the Adapter's main network voting is scheduled to take place at 17:00 UTC on September 16, when these enhanced features are expected to be applied to online network operations.
Operators managing integrations based on standards are recommended to update their software for testnet deployment by August 27 and prepare for mainnet activation by September 16. Notably, Protocol 28 introduces a sparse mapping host function that allows contracts to better manage missing or extra fields in migration or upgrade scenarios.
Recent agreement changes aim to make Stellar more capable and developer friendly in building financial applications, while maintaining its fast transaction speeds and low operating costs that distinguish it from other networks.
Stellar's Future Growth Strategy
By implementing Adapter upgrades, Stellar aims to position its network as an ideal choice for builders seeking scalable and secure smart contract capabilities. The combination of simpler contract management and better network consensus performance solves many of the key scalability challenges facing blockchain.
The Stellar Development Foundation emphasizes its dual commitment to reliable network operations and creating a flexible development environment. Adapter is expected to consolidate Stellar's position in decentralized finance and broader blockchain applications.
