After five years of building on XRP Ledger, Gen3 co-founders make difficult decisions

After about five years of building products on XRP Ledger (XRPL), Gen3 co-founder Shen said the company can no longer justify investing time, money and energy on the network-based retail platform. In a lengthy post posted on X, Shen described the decision as one of the most difficult choices Gen3 has ever made. He said the team started building on XRPL long before the XLS-20 amendment and spent years developing products designed to expand the ecosystem.

Shen highlighted multiple projects that Gen3 helped develop during this period. These include Zerpmon-which he described as one of the earliest NFT series of games in the XRP ecosystem, and Aigent-which introduced autonomous agents capable of using XRPL primitives. Gen3 also developed the Axiom Protocol, which Shen called XRP's first prediction market. The company also partnered with Futureverse to develop TRN, building the core market and decentralized exchange infrastructure for the XRPL sidechains.

Difficult decisions five years later

Shen said that during the time Gen3 was built on XRPL, the entire XRP ecosystem has undergone major changes. Despite this experience, the team believes there is no longer a sustainable path to operating retail platforms on XRPL. He also reflects on personal engagement: Over the past five years, he has devoted most of his life to building XRPL and has made sacrifices in other ways to pursue the work. He praised the Gen3 team's dedication and said he could not expect a better and more talented partner. He also thanked organizations such as XRPL Commons, RippleX, Tenity, DIFC, Futureverse and Victus Global for their support.

Gen3 will continue to support XRPL

This decision does not mean Gen3 will leave XRP Ledger. Shen said the company will continue to participate in the ecosystem from different perspectives. Gen3 will continue to operate and maintain its dUNL verification node. The team will also review, test, discuss and vote on upcoming amendments. Shen said that years of development work have given the team a deep technical understanding of ledgers, which remains important to their continued participation. However, Shen personally plans to temporarily withdraw from construction work and social media to focus on those aspects of his personal life that have been affected by years of continued efforts.

Financial difficulties and turning institutions

Shen also talked about the financing environment for XRPL startups. He said financing opportunities are seriously insufficient for startups that have not yet generated revenue from other blockchains or lack deep relationships with organizations that control large amounts of resources. He hopes that those with the resources to support innovative XRPL projects will put more resources into the ecosystem. At the same time, he also acknowledged that no one has an obligation to provide support and that builders must decide for themselves where they can continue to develop. For Gen3, this road no longer involves the XRPL platform for retail. Shen concluded by saying that personally, he is now looking to institutions, while Gen3 remains committed to supporting the technological development of XRP Ledger.
