Gen Z traders drive the growth of Binance ETF shares, and the tokenized stock market expands simultaneously
According to a research report, Gen Z traders on the Binance platform are continuing to increase their focus on exchange-traded funds (ETFs). In early August this year, ETF products accounted for 25% of Gen Z stock trading volume.
Intergenerational trends in trading activity
In July, ETFs accounted for 21.9% of Gen Z's net equity inflows, up from 18.5% in June. During the same period, the allocation ratio of individual stocks fell from 77% to 74.2%.
The study compared the trading frequency, net capital flow, and leverage use of direct stocks, tokenized stocks, and traditional financial (TradFi) sustainability products across generations, covering Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X and baby boomers.
Among the three types of products, Gen Z has a lower transaction frequency than that of Millennials and Gen X. Gen Z accounts execute an average of 13 TradFi sustainable product transactions per month, compared with 17 for Millennials and 16.5 for Gen X.
22% of Gen Z's direct stock accounts have never executed a sell order. This compares with 19% for Generation Xers and 9% for Baby Boomers. Millennials have the highest proportion of accounts with only buying operations, reaching 30%.
Research points out that among Gen Z accounts that only conduct buying operations, the top three with the largest cumulative purchases are Broadcom, Tesla and Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETFs.
The study also found that Gen Z has limited interest in leveraged ETFs and reverse ETFs. About 88.2% of Gen Z TradFi perpetual accounts have not traded in these higher-risk products, compared with 84.5% for Millennials and 85.9% for Gen X, respectively.
Research notes that its direct equity products did not reach significant size until June, so the data window for establishing long-term trends is relatively short.
Tokenized stocks: The shift in the market landscape
This week, Binance's bStocks once overtook Kraken's xStocks to become the second-largest issuer of tokenized stocks. Data shows that less than two months after bStocks went online, its tokenized stock value has reached US$610.6 million, compared with US$601.2 million as of Tuesday.
As of Friday, the rankings had reversed: xStocks held $610.7 million and bStocks held $579.6 million. These two issuers account for 22.3% and 21.2% respectively of the total market value of tokenized shares (US$2.7 billion).
Ondo Finance remains the largest issuer, managing $971.8 million in tokenized stock value.
Major issuer data are as follows:
Ondo Finance: Tokenized shares are worth US$971.8 million, with a market share of approximately 36%
xStocks (Kraken): Tokenized shares are worth US$610.7 million, with a market share of 22.3%
bStocks (Binance): Tokenized stocks are valued at US$579.6 million and have a market share of 21.2%
The broader market for tokenized stocks continues to expand. Data showed that as of Friday, distributed value was $2.43 billion, an increase of about 5% from the previous 30 days.
Tokenized stocks are digital representations of traditional equity, allowing blockchain-based transactions and ownership. Such tools appeal to investors who want to gain exposure to real-world assets on the chain without leaving the crypto ecosystem.
Dictionary: Tokenized stocks, also known as synthetic stocks or blockchain-based equity, are digital assets designed to simulate the price and ownership structure of traditional stocks. They can be bought, sold and settled on blockchain platforms, providing investors with higher accessibility and partial ownership.
