Cardano Dijkstra upgrade roadmap clarifies that major node changes are promoted

Cardano's Dijkstra upgrade will be implemented in phases: Linear Leios and Nested Transactions will be introduced in the first phase, and Peras will be deployed in the second phase. At the same time, Amaru is becoming another Cardano node implementation, providing pledge pool operators with more infrastructure options in addition to existing Haskell node software. Cardano's constitutional update will incorporate Dijkstra protocol parameters into the governance fence through a dedicated constitutional amendment portal and process.

As the network moves towards the planned Dijkstra hard fork, Cardano developers are preparing for major node and protocol changes. Intersect confirmed that the agreed scope and target dates will remain unchanged and that Dijkstra's implementation will follow the existing roadmap. The upgrade will be completed in two phases, allowing developers to introduce multiple network functions through independent deployments.

The first phase will bring Nested Transactions and Linear Leios to the Cardano main network, with an expected delivery time of late 2026. This structure provides developers with a gradual path to gradually introduce key Dijkstra features while maintaining the overall development schedule.

The second phase is planned to introduce Peras through an intra-era hard fork in the second quarter of 2027. The second deployment will extend the network changes established in the first phase.

Amaru node moves towards main network block production

Cardano's node infrastructure is also expanding, and Amaru is an open source implementation developed in Rust as an alternative to Haskell nodes. According to Intersect, Amaru can operate as a relay node while verifying network activity and synchronizing with the latest status of the Cardano blockchain. Developers plan to have the node start producing blocks on the main network in November 2026.

In addition, Amaru aims to provide pledge pool operators and Cardano developers with a fully interoperable block production option. Its design emphasizes modular architecture and is optimized for hardware requirements to support a wider range of deployment scenarios.

Node diversity helps enhance Cardano's infrastructure by reducing reliance on a single software implementation. At the same time, multiple implementation options provide operators with greater flexibility when selecting the infrastructure that supports their network participation.

Governance changes prepare Dijkstra

Cardano is also adjusting its governance framework to accommodate protocol parameters introduced through Dijkstra, including parameters related to Ouroboros Leios. According to the Cardano Constitution, governing bodies are not allowed to modify agreement parameters unless the guardrails in the constitution explicitly include these parameters. Therefore, the planned Dijkstra functionality requires corresponding constitutional provisions for governance agencies to manage these parameters.

Contributors intend to introduce the required parameters through a single coordinated constitutional amendment, rather than submitting multiple separate proposals. This approach will establish governance coverage for each function in the Dijkstra plan in a single unified update.

In addition, Intersect outlined a clear process for community engagement around constitutional amendments related to Dijkstra and future network upgrades. The Constitutional Amendment Portal will support the discussion, submission and promulgation of proposals, while the Citizens 'Committee will support the entire process.

Dijkstra Roadmap Integrating Nodes and Protocol Changes

Dijkstra represents a broader technology transformation involving Cardano's protocol architecture, node infrastructure and governance framework. Linear Leios and Nested Transactions will be the core of the first deployment, while Peras will follow in the planned 2027 hard fork. Amaru's development also added another node implementation to Cardano's infrastructure in the Dijkstra era.
