Algorand v5.0.0 has received 90% node support and the upgrade can be activated after the cooling-down period ends. The native Falcon-1024 account provides post-quantum signature support for the Algorand protocol layer. AVM v13 expands smart contract capabilities with larger contract size, new opcodes, and cross-application box storage support. The new per-byte billing model is optimized for large transaction volumes while keeping standard transfer fees unchanged.
Algorand v5.0.0 has 90% node support and upgrades can be activated after the cooling-down period. This agreement change is Algorand's largest upgrade since the launch of pledge rewards in January 2025. It introduces native post-quantum accounts, while expanding smart contract capabilities and adopting a more flexible fee model. The upgrade also takes Algorand one step closer to protocol designs that can adapt to the evolution of cryptographic standards.

The Algorand team confirmed on the X platform that the 90% support threshold has been reached. Once the required cooling-off period ends, the upgrade will be officially activated and the mainnetwork deployment is expected to be completed soon. Algorand v5.0.0 introduces a native Falcon-1024 account for post-quantum signatures. This change integrates quantum-resistant account support directly into the protocol rather than just application-level tools. The upgrade also introduces AVM v13, which expands the size of smart contracts and adds new features. New opcodes include poseidon2, and cross-application box storage support further expands the way applications manage data.
Algorand has built a post-quantum infrastructure through early network upgrades and account realizations. According to X user Marco Salzmann, v5.0.0 shifts this effort to achieve broader cryptographic flexibility across the protocol.

The new version introduces a per-byte billing model for large transactions and compute-intensive operations. Under the new structure, standard transfers will not face the same fee adjustments. This model gives Algorand greater flexibility when transactions require more storage or computing resources. At the same time, it established a mechanism so that fees can reflect the size of the transaction without changing the cost of ordinary transfers. Alex (X username france.algo), a member of the Algorand community, said that thousands of node operators completed the upgrade in a few days. He called v5.0.0 one of the largest protocol upgrades on the network. Salzmann also outlined a broader roadmap involving hybrid accounts, post-quantum multi-signature, and further Falcon research. The roadmap also includes follow-up work on post-quantum verifiable random functions and consensus mechanisms.
