Test network work started, and Protocol 27 was launched immediately after the Protocol 26 main network was launched.

@PiCoreTeam started launching Protocol 27 upgrades on the test network this week, and it was rapidly advancing after completing the deployment of Protocol 26 main network. September 15 is the target date for the team to bring Protocol 27 to the main network. The core focus is on smart contract authentication-providing more advanced on-chain transaction authorization methods for accounts and applications.

Pi Network has completed the mandatory upgrade of Protocol 26 on August 11, 2026, and designated Protocol 27 as a "final planned upgrade", marking the end of the current development sequence. Protocol 26 itself focuses on four areas: contract security, state management, interoperability, and cryptographic capabilities. Protocol 27 is built directly on this basis.

The final step before the network fully matures

The Pi Core Team describes Protocol 27 as the last major protocol upgrade that is expected to include expanded smart contract capabilities, DeFi infrastructure, DEX liquidity mechanisms, and infrastructure for real-world merchant payments. This milestone is expected to integrate the latest protocol features and improvements to lay the technical foundation for a possible open mainnet transition, but the specific timetable depends on the successful deployment and stability of previous upgrades.

Protocol 27 is the final planned upgrade in the current development cycle of Pi Network. Eight protocol upgrades starting with version 19.6 have been completed since February. The recent launch of tools such as SoloHost, Pi Sign-in and PiVerify at Pi2Day 2026 shows that Core Team is pushing Pi towards computing, identity and authentication use cases, which is expected to generate real on-chain demand.

Notes for node operators

For node operators, no immediate action is required before the Pi Core Team's official release of Protocol 27. The specific time and requirements of Protocol 27 will be notified separately. Operators who have completed Protocol 26 should pay attention to the official channels of Pi Network for announcements.
