SBI Holdings joins hands with Solana to expand Japan's tokenized asset market

SBI Holdings has reached a partnership with the Solana Foundation to accelerate the development of tokenized financial products in Japan. Under the agreement, SBI R3 Japan will change its name to SBI Solana Global, marking a strategic shift towards public blockchain infrastructure for regulated digital assets.

This cooperation also teamed up with Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) to jointly expand the issuance of tokenized assets and improve access to global capital markets. Through this cooperation, SBI seeks to consolidate Japan's position in the growing real-world asset (RWA) field while advancing its multi-chain blockchain strategy.

SBI expands tokenization strategy with Solana

SBI Solana Global will focus on tokenization of a variety of financial products. The platform will support the issuance of yen-linked stablecoins JPYSC, as well as tokenized corporate bonds, commercial paper and real estate assets. In addition, the infrastructure will facilitate cross-border transfers and micro-payments between autonomous AI agents. These features are expected to improve settlement efficiency while opening up new application scenarios for regulated digital assets.

This reorganization also marks a major transformation for SBI R3 Japan. The business initially had Corda at its core-a privately owned enterprise blockchain designed specifically for institutional transactions. However, SBI decided to prioritize Solana's public blockchain infrastructure due to its high transaction capacity, low fees, and mature developer ecosystem.

Despite this, SBI has not abandoned its existing blockchain partnership. Ripple will continue to be responsible for supporting corporate payment infrastructure and inter-business settlement services in SBI Financial Networks. Solana will provide a programmable environment for digital securities and other tokenized financial products. In this way, SBI can utilize different blockchain networks for different financial service needs.

Solana's growing RWA ecosystem affects decision-making

Market data also supports SBI's decision to build a tokenization platform on Solana. Data from rwa.xyz shows that Solana is one of the largest blockchain networks in the field of tokenizing real-world assets. The network currently holds approximately $3.3 billion in tokenized assets and involves 697 active projects. By comparison, Avalanche supports approximately $2.1 billion, while the tokenized assets on the XRP ledger are approximately $322.9 million.

In addition, Solana's mature ecosystem gives SBI immediate access to existing liquidity, developers and institutional participants. This shortens the time required to launch new financial products while promoting wider adoption. SBI plans to promote SBI Solana Global first in Japan and later expand to other major Asian financial markets. Ultimately, SBI aims to build a regulated blockchain infrastructure capable of supporting regional tokenized asset markets.

Public blockchain accounts for greater proportion in SBI's digital asset strategy

SBI's latest move highlights how traditional financial institutions are increasingly integrating public blockchain networks into regulated financial services. The company does not rely entirely on private infrastructure, but instead combines multiple blockchain platforms to meet different business needs.

While Ripple will continue to be responsible for corporate payment solutions, Solana will play a more important role in tokenized securities and programmable financial products. This strategy allows SBI to expand its digital asset portfolio without replacing existing financial infrastructure.

SBI Holdings 'collaboration with the Solana Foundation marks its broader commitment to public blockchain technology in the field of tokenized finance. By combining Solana's smart contract capabilities with its existing financial network, SBI is positioning its digital asset business to support the continued expansion of regulated real-world asset markets in Japan and Asia.
