Overview
In the first half of 2026, Coinbase Ventures led cryptocurrency venture investment activity with 30 startup transactions.
DeFi, payments and artificial intelligence remain the main areas attracting venture capital.
Despite a slight rebound in June and July, overall cryptocurrency financing remains weak.
According to CryptoRank, Coinbase's venture capital arm led all cryptocurrency-focused investors with 30 deals between January and June, surpassing Animoca Brands (19 investments), venture capital firm a16z (18 investments) and stablecoin issuer Tether (15 investments). The latest ranking comes as venture capital amounts across the digital asset industry are still well below levels earlier this year.
Coinbase Ventures maintains lead amid weak funding
CryptoRank data also shows that Coinbase Ventures has extended its lead over longer periods of time. In the past 12 months, the company has made 75 investments, compared with 40 for Animoca Brands, 39 for YZi Labs (formerly Binance Labs), 31 for GSRs, and 30 for a16z.
Although investment activity by leading companies remained stable, the amount of money entering the sector fell significantly. CryptoRank reported that cryptocurrency companies raised $1.4 billion in June through 61 rounds of funding, down from $3.8 billion in April. Financing rounds also dropped from 89 rounds in May to 61 rounds in June.
Even so, June was a slight improvement from April, when startups only raised $698 million through 71 rounds of funding, the worst monthly performance in two years. Previous reports cited another set of data showing that financing in April was US$659 million, involving 63 transactions, a decrease of 74% from March, pushing monthly venture capital amounts back to their 2024 lows, despite decentralized finance and artificial intelligence projects. continue to attract investors.
Preliminary signs of recovery have emerged in July. According to CryptoRank, cryptocurrency companies have raised $456 million this month through 12 rounds of funding.
DeFi, payments and AI continue to attract investors
Coinbase Ventures 'recent investments have focused on payment infrastructure, decentralized finance and blockchain infrastructure. CryptoRank said it participated in seven rounds of financing involving payment agreements in the first six months of this year, as well as four rounds of DeFi investments, and three rounds each focusing on infrastructure and real-world asset tokenization.
According to CryptoRank, among the entire venture capital market, DeFi remained the most active category over the past year, with 216 rounds of funding. Payments startups followed closely with 131 rounds, with cryptocurrency projects focusing on artificial intelligence receiving 128 rounds of financing. Infrastructure companies completed 110 rounds of financing, with less than 100 deals in all other industries during the same period.
However, investor participation has narrowed. CryptoRank reported that the number of independent investors fell to 242 in June, compared with 452 in October 2025, indicating that while leading venture capital groups continue to invest, fewer companies are actively supporting new cryptocurrency startups.
Regional data also highlights the concentration of venture capital. According to CryptoRank, U.S. investors have deployed US$5.8 billion in the past six months, while Australia investors have contributed US$3.6 billion. An additional $11.6 billion was invested from undisclosed locations, highlighting the continuing role of undisclosed capital in cryptocurrency risk financing.
Although the overall funding environment is still weaker than earlier this year, new data from CryptoRank shows that mature venture capital firms led by Coinbase Ventures continue to support startups building payment systems, DeFi applications, AI products and blockchain infrastructure, although total capital flowing into the space remains under pressure.
