An old video showing a SWIFT representative resurfaced after crypto researcher SMQKE highlighted it on X, reigniting interest in the payment network's past collaboration with corporate blockchain company R3.
The post mentioned a SWIFT executive discussing the company's collaboration with R3 and the integration of SWIFT gpi with R3's Corda ecosystem, while implying that the development supports XRP through Corda Settler.
This video has attracted renewed attention because it mentions a real collaboration announced in 2019. However, the relationship between SWIFT, R3 and XRP has often been interpreted differently over the years, so it is crucial to distinguish established facts from the widespread claims circulating in the crypto community.
Swift representatives previously confirmed their cooperation with R3 and the use of Corda Settler, which supports XRP.
SWIFT explains its collaboration with R3
In the video accompanying the SMQKE post, a SWIFT representative answers questions about emerging technologies, including APIs and distributed ledger technology, and how they affect cross-border payments.
The representative explained that SWIFT has built APIs into its Global Payments Innovation (gpi) service that allow banks and corporate customers to integrate payment tracking directly into their systems. He added that SWIFT also uses APIs to connect the gpi experience to the distributed ledger ecosystem.
As part of that effort, the executive confirmed that SWIFT has partnered with R3, describing R3 as a blockchain infrastructure software provider. He said the collaboration enabled R3 's Corda Settler to support SWIFT gpi, allowing a blockchain-based environment to access SWIFT's global payment capabilities. He emphasized that the main goal is not the technology itself, but to improve the payment experience by reducing friction, increasing speed and enhancing visibility into cross-border transactions.
How XRP gets into the discussion
SMQKE's post connects the video to XRP because Corda Settler previously introduced support for digital assets. Before SWIFT announced its proof-of-concept partnership with R3, R3 had launched Corda Settler, an application designed to settle debt using different payment mechanisms. XRP is the first cryptocurrency supported by the platform.
This technical detail often leads to claims that SWIFT itself has adopted or used XRP. However, the partnership did not establish XRP as a clearing asset for SWIFT. Instead, the focus of the proof-of-concept is to have users operate on R3 's Corda platform to initiate and track traditional SWIFT gpi payments. These transactions continue to be settled through SWIFT's existing banking infrastructure using traditional fiat currencies rather than cryptocurrencies.
Community response continues
The post received comments from community member Eugene Clark, who said XRP will eventually play a major role in global capital flows due to its transaction speed, and mentioned its patented technology. While this view is common in the XRP community, historical cooperation itself should be viewed in context. SWIFT's cooperation with R3 is real and has been publicly confirmed. However, it is just an enterprise integration test that connects blockchain-based workflows to SWIFT's existing payment network. Although R3 's Corda Settler supports XRP as a settlement option, the initiative does not represent SWIFT's direct endorsement or adoption of XRP.
