Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin releases experimental anonymous message board

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has released an experimental Aztec message board that combines anonymous posting, refundable deposits and automated review capabilities.

Core Points:

Users store Ethereum on the Ethereum main network, publish information without revealing the address, and then withdraw funds.

Designated reviewers and local AI models can flag posts that violate audit rules stored on the chain.

This early project contained 70 formally verified security theorems, but there were still a number of access and browser issues that remained unresolved.

Aztec message board demonstration

Butrin shared the project via Farcaster on Sunday, calling it a toy-like version of an anonymous message board that is "atmosphere coded", a concept he discussed in a 2022 blog post. The public code is available through his GitHub account.

The app runs its private posting process on the Aztec network. Users deposit ETH through the basic layer of Ethereum, claim the deposit on the second-layer network, publish the message without disclosing the sender's address, and then return the funds to the first-layer network.

Public invocation data does not associate posts with original deposits. The destination address is displayed when withdrawing money because the system must send ETH somewhere.

The contract specifies an auditor at deployment time. The account can mark posts as "unethical," hide them from the default stream, and extend the wait time for authors to post again.

AI review rules

A local large language model daemon monitors new posts and compares them to text rules stored on the chain. When a violation is detected, the tool marks the post using the application's command-line interface.

The frequency of posts depends on the user's deposit amount. Depositing 0.001 ETH allows one post per hour, while 0.01 ETH shortens the cooldown time to 10 posts per hour.

The

code base shows that Lean 4 formal verification covers rate limits, audit screening, privacy and deposit security through 70 proven theorems, and there are no unfilled loopholes. But the project is still in the experimental stage, and its documentation lists unfinished access control modifications and browser processes that have not yet been fully tested.

Butrin originally outlined this broader idea in 2022 as part of a search for applications that combine privacy with accountability. This new demonstration translates the proposal into workable code, but does not prove that automated reviews can resolve disputes over subjective rules.
