Telegram plans to launch a native unmanaged Gram wallet in its instant messaging app this summer, which could allow more than 1 billion monthly active users to implement self-managed cryptocurrency payments.

In a post on Wednesday, founder Pavel Durov said the wallet will allow users to send cryptocurrency instantly and for no fee. He described it as "the largest deployment of an unmanaged cryptocurrency wallet in human history," although Telegram has not yet announced an exact release date or more technical details.

Pavel Durov announced Telegram's Gram wallet.

Telegram will exceed 1 billion monthly active users in 2025, which makes the wallet's potential coverage far beyond most independent cryptocurrency applications, according to the company's data. Even limited adoption among the platform's user base could significantly expand the accessibility of self-hosted and point-to-point encrypted payments.

Gram returns to Telegram's cryptographic roots

A few weeks before the wallet's announcement, The Open Network, a blockchain deeply integrated with Telegram, announced plans to rename its native tokens from Toncoin to Gram. The change restores the cryptocurrency's original name in Telegram's 2018 white paper, which founder Pavel Durov described as a return to the project's roots.

Telegram abandoned its original blockchain project after reaching a settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2020 and has since become increasingly supportive of the TON ecosystem. The network said Gram's name change is part of a broader roadmap to expand encryption services and Web3 capabilities within Telegram.
