Franklin Templeton executives: AI agents will become the next "killer" application for blockchain and cryptocurrency
Sandy Cower, head of digital assets and innovation at investment management giant Franklin Templeton, said that artificial intelligence agents are the next "killer" application scenario for blockchain and cryptocurrency. Kaul posted on social media on Wednesday that the AI proxy economy will drive increased demand for blockchain protocols that support micropayments between machines, as traditional card networks are not suitable for proxy payments due to high fees and long settlement times.
Kaul pointed out when introducing his more than 1800-word article: "Today, in order to seize AI growth opportunities, most investors will buy stocks in AI-related companies and their verticals. But does the same strategy apply to proxy AI?" He believes that blockchain networks such as Aptos, Solana and BNB Chain are more suitable for the proxy economy because they can settle transactions in seconds, which is much faster than Visa networks, which require one to three business days to settle.
In a report jointly released by payment giant Visa and investment paper platform Artemis last Wednesday, the two sides pointed out that traditional card payment methods designed for low-frequency human commercial activities cannot meet the needs of AI agents. AI agents require underlying infrastructure with near-zero fees and faster settlement to make agent-based micropayments commercially feasible.
Visa's cryptocurrency arm and Stripe-backed Tempo both launched AI tools in March. Visa's tools allow AI agents to make same-day payments. Some machine payment protocols have shown signs of being adopted. According to a joint report by Visa and Artemis, the x402 payment protocol developed by Coinbase has processed more than 109 million adjusted transactions since its launch in May 2025, with adjusted transaction volume reaching US$15 million.
