Coinbase builds post-quantum custody system, Bitcoin developers join the Quantum Security Initiative
Coinbase is developing a post-quantum custody system to deal with possible future cryptographic threats. The exchange plans to launch an automated post-quantum signature pipeline within the next year. Coinbase said its current Key Management Service already protects approximately 99.9 percent of its managed assets. The company established the Independent Advisory Committee on Quantum Computing and Blockchain earlier this year and worked with core Bitcoin developers, cryptographers and researchers to discuss migration strategies.
Coinbase is expanding its work in the field of post-quantum security to prepare for future quantum computers that may challenge Bitcoin's current cryptographic system. The company said that while the risk is not imminent, preparation in advance is necessary because upgrading decentralized systems and migrating millions of users requires careful coordination. Coinbase also confirmed that it is working with developers and researchers while supporting broader Bitcoin security efforts through industry partnerships.
Coinbase builds post-quantum custody system
Coinbase said it is developing a post-quantum custody system that will allow customers to switch to stronger password protection once blockchain networks adopt new standards. The company explained that its current Key Management Service already protects approximately 99.9% of its custody assets. The exchange said its Independent Advisory Committee on Quantum Computing and Blockchain will deliver an automated post-quantum signature pipeline within the next year. The system will use secure enclaves and threshold cryptography to support future blockchain upgrades. "Large-scale quantum computers capable of cracking current cryptography will eventually be built," Coinbase said. It added that preparations should begin "before the emergency arrives."
Bitcoin developers join quantum security initiative
Coinbase said it is gathering core Bitcoin developers, cryptographers and security researchers to discuss migration strategies for the post-quantum era. The company plans to continue holding these discussions as it moves forward with new safety standards. The exchange is also a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Alliance, with other members including industry participants such as BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, and Block. The alliance has pledged funding and engineering support for open source Bitcoin security projects, including proposals such as BIP-360. "Preparing Bitcoin for the post-quantum era is one of the most important and complex challenges the protocol has ever faced," Coinbase said.
The encryption industry has been focusing on the development of quantum computing for years, although experts believe the actual risks are far away. Quantum computers are still in the experimental stage and still face technical limitations before they can perform large-scale cryptographic attacks. Interest in post-quantum security has increased after Google researchers reported that future developments could significantly shorten the time needed to crack existing cryptography. While some researchers believe these concerns are premature, others have begun testing anti-quantum signatures on blockchain sidechains.
