Circle has partnered with Kakao Group and Toss Bank to expand South Korea's stablecoin payment ecosystem.
Circle has further expanded its influence in South Korea and strengthened its stablecoin-based payment strategy by establishing cooperative relationships with Kakao Group and Toss Bank respectively. According to Circle's announcement on the X platform, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with Kakao Group to explore blockchain-based payment infrastructure; at the same time, Circle also reached a cooperation with Toss Bank to jointly evaluate application scenarios for stablecoin payments.
These two agreements highlight Circle's growing focus on South Korea's digital finance sector. Circle has further expanded its business landscape by connecting USDC issuers with two well-known local fintech companies that serve millions of users.
Kakao Group operates a number of widely used digital platforms, including KakaoTalk, Kakao Pay and KakaoBank. This makes it possible for Circle to explore blockchain payment solutions in South Korea's largest digital ecosystem. At the same time, Toss Bank, as an Internet bank, is steadily expanding its involvement in blockchain technology through partnerships with digital asset companies and will evaluate how stablecoins support payment services and other financial products.
The new agreement builds on Circle's previous expansion in South Korea
Circle's latest cooperation further enriches its business network in South Korea, after the company signed agreements with Upbit and Bithumb, South Korea's two largest cryptocurrency exchanges, in April this year. These collaborations are mainly focused on promoting the adoption of USDC on South Korean trading platforms, while exploring more technical cooperation projects around Circle's blockchain infrastructure.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said in an April announcement that these collaborations are not limited to exchange support, but also create opportunities for other technology collaborations in Circle's expanding ecosystem. In addition to strengthening its relationship with cryptocurrency exchanges, Circle has also further broadened its strategic layout by working directly with financial technology companies, extending its business coverage from digital asset trading to consumer payment services.
Toss Bank also brought its previously accumulated blockchain experience to this cooperation. Last month, the bank announced a partnership with the Solana Foundation to develop blockchain-based financial infrastructure for global users.
Although global influence continues to grow, USDC still faces fierce competition
Circle's expansion comes at a time when competition in the stablecoin market is fierce. As of Thursday, USDC's circulating supply had reached approximately $74.4 billion. However, Tether still leads the market with a significant advantage. During the same period, USDT's circulation supply was approximately US$184.3 billion, highlighting its dominant position in the global stablecoin market.
South Korea, with its vibrant cryptocurrency market and highly developed digital payments ecosystem, has always been a favored target market for stablecoin companies. Therefore, partnerships with established fintech companies are expected to consolidate Circle's long-term market position as blockchain-based payment services gain wider adoption.
Conclusion
Circle's partnership with Kakao Group and Toss Bank expands its business beyond cryptocurrency exchanges to the broader fintech sector in South Korea. These agreements also further reinforce the company's strategy to drive USDC adoption by partnering with established payment and banking platforms.
