This service expansion provides the Swiss banking industry with more convenient access to regulated cryptocurrency products.
BancaStato banking infrastructure embeds cryptocurrency trading
Swiss state financial institution BancaStato has leveraged Sygnum's cryptocurrency infrastructure and Avaloq's banking technology to launch regulated digital currency trading capabilities in its banking applications. This new feature allows account holders to purchase, store and sell Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Litecoin directly through the bank's existing web and mobile interfaces. The integration enhances BancaStato's digital portfolio while integrating cryptocurrency services into its regulated banking framework.
This integration is achieved by docking Sygnum's enterprise-level application programming interface with BancaStato's Avaloq core banking system. Account holders can trade digital assets using the same applications as traditional banking and investment activities. By integrating digital assets directly into existing services, the financial institution no longer needs to develop a separate trading interface. After launch, BancaStato provides trading functions for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Litecoin. Account holders can place market orders denominated in cryptocurrency units or corresponding US dollar amounts. Banks maintain oversight of investment portfolios within their existing digital banking interface.
Sygnum handles all cryptocurrency transactions through its regulated infrastructure and provides institution-level custody solutions. The managed architecture includes hardware security, software protection, governance protocols and independent auditing. In addition, customer digital assets are stored separately from the institution's balance sheet in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Expand digital asset services through Sygnum Banking Infrastructure
This deployment makes BancaStato one of more than 25 financial institutions using Sygnum's enterprise-level banking infrastructure. This integration makes BancaStato the first bank in the Avaloq software-as-a-service platform to activate cryptocurrency transactions supported by Sygnum through a direct API connection. This approach eliminates the need for a separate order management system, reducing operational complexity. The streamlined architecture allows BancaStato adjust trading functions while retaining existing banking infrastructure. The framework facilitates risk oversight without adding additional operational layers. Account holders can manage traditional investments and digital assets through a unified banking relationship without using multiple platforms.
BancaStato was founded in 1915 to provide financial services in the canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland. The agency continues to expand its range of investment products while maintaining its regulated banking framework. This cryptocurrency integration incorporates digital assets without changing the digital channel customer interface.
BancaStato Digital Asset Integration Industry Background
Sygnum continues to expand its regulated digital asset infrastructure for Swiss and wider European financial institutions. Its cooperative network currently provides digital asset services to more than one-third of the Swiss population through affiliated banking institutions. Previous integration cases include entities such as PostFinance, Zuger Kantonalbank, Bordier & Cie, and SocGen FORGE. In recent years, this infrastructure has experienced continued growth as traditional banks have enhanced the supply of digital asset products. Early integration shows that bank customers have significant demand for combining cryptocurrency services with traditional financial instruments. Subsequently, PostFinance introduced Ethereum pledge capabilities through its existing banking platform, further expanding the service portfolio supported by Sygnum.
The deployment of BancaStato is another important milestone for Sygnum's European operations. On June 30, 2026, Sygnum Europe obtained the authorization of a cryptographic asset service provider under the EU Cryptographic Asset Markets Regulation through the Liechtenstein Financial Markets Authority. This regulatory approval enhances regulated digital asset services for EU banking institutions while facilitating future growth through mature banking infrastructure.
