Cross-border payments have long been regarded as a key area where blockchain technology can improve speed and transparency. As an independent participant responsible for confirming transactions on the XRP ledger, XRPL validator Vet recently shared his personal experience with international bank transfers-he encountered long delays in remitting funds from Europe to the United States.

Delay in bank transfers reveals shortcomings in traditional systems

Vet initially stated on the X platform that he had initiated a wire transfer in euros, hoping that the recipient would pay the account in US dollars. However, several days later, the funds had not yet reached their U.S. destinations, and the payment was allegedly blocked at the transit bank involved. During this period, Vet launched SWIFT tracking to find out where transfers had stalled. He suspects the delay stems from currency exchange queue problems, a common phenomenon in traditional international wire transfers.

Vet compared his experience with the ability of the XRP ledger chain to decentralize exchanges. He pointed out that euro/dollar transactions on the XRP ledger can be settled in seconds, and all details can be checked instantly by any participant-a stark contrast to the opaque process in the traditional banking system. He emphasized that blockchain-based payment solutions solve fundamental efficiency problems in traditional cross-border banking systems, enabling real-time settlement and transparent operations for users worldwide.

Final settlement and ongoing infrastructure concerns

After days of uncertainty, Vet reported that delayed payments finally reached recipients in the United States. He explained that the bank responsible for processing had to resubmit the transaction, and SWIFT tracking did not reveal where the payment was stuck. Vet believes that it is likely that a domestic transfer bank stepped in and re-routed the transaction to another institution by modifying the settlement order, allowing the payment to be completed. Although funds eventually arrive, Vet pointed out that the need for manual inspections exposes logistics shortcomings in traditional banking processes, especially when multiple parties are involved.

He further commented that delays caused by transit banks have increased customer anxiety by the inability to track funds in real time, which is in sharp contrast to blockchain alternatives that provide instant visibility into transaction status. Vet also echoed the view of some critics that XRP price performance fails to reflect its intrinsic value. He refuted this view, pointing out that the actual utility of the network and the underlying technology should be viewed separately from short-term market fluctuations. Although the transaction was ultimately successfully settled, Vet emphasized that the technical advantages and application scenarios of blockchain infrastructure should not be reflected solely through market prices. He advises market skeptics to understand first-hand the benefits of blockchain at the operational level.

In addition to looking at his own specific payment issues, Vet reiterated his long-held belief that blockchain technology will drive major improvements in the financial sector. He pointed out that with the development of global payment systems, rapid settlement, transparent tracking and reducing reliance on intermediaries will become increasingly important. He encourages others to base their investment strategies on an understanding of these long-term benefits, rather than just focusing on short-term asset prices.

This delayed payment incident ultimately highlights Vet's point that while traditional banks can complete cross-border transfers, the process is often slow and opaque. In contrast, payment networks built on XRP ledgers are designed to address many bottlenecks that still exist in traditional infrastructure.
