Stripe plans to acquire AI model market OpenRouter for $10 billion

Stripe, a financial technology giant currently valued at US$159 billion, has entered negotiations to acquire OpenRouter. OpenRouter is a New York-based company that focuses on providing developers with access to AI models. People familiar with the matter said the deal could value OpenRouter at about $10 billion.

OpenRouter was founded in 2023 and has built a comprehensive platform containing hundreds of large language models. The service allows users to evaluate and seamlessly switch between different AI products, including proprietary models from OpenAI and Anthropic, as well as free open source models. Its revenue model is a percentage mark-up on the base price of each model-a method similar to traditional payment processing business structures.

PitchBook data shows that the startup will be valued at US$1.3 billion in its May 2026 financing round. Its investors include Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, the investment arm of Alphabet (Google's parent company).

Although the deal may be announced soon, people familiar with the matter warned that negotiations are still in progress and could break down. Before Stripe became a leader, several well-known technology companies evaluated this AI routing platform.

Strategic expansion beyond traditional payments

This acquisition is part of Stripe's continued diversification strategy beyond traditional payment processing business. The company announced plans earlier this year to focus on developing infrastructure that supports artificial intelligence applications and cryptocurrency transactions.

"As tokens and currencies become increasingly fungible, real-time streaming payments are an important part of the economic infrastructure Stripe builds for AI," Stripe said in a statement earlier this year.

The two companies have a commercial relationship, and OpenRouter uses Stripe's platform to process customer payments.

OpenRouter CEO Alex Atallah has compared his company's operating framework to Stripe's business approach. Both companies act as middlemen-Stripe facilitates currency transactions, while OpenRouter manages access to AI computing resources.

There is a growing need for AI model flexibility

Organizations are gradually adopting multi-model AI strategies to manage costs and reduce reliance on a single supplier. This trend has increased the strategic importance of platforms that promote routing for AI models.

The competitive landscape is expanding rapidly. Developer tool Cursor launched its own routing solution a few days ago. Ramp, a financial management platform valued at $44 billion, is developing similar features. Data analytics company Databricks has deployed similar technical capabilities.

While OpenRouter is negotiating, Stripe is working with private equity firm Advent International to explore the possibility of acquiring PayPal. The partner submitted an informal proposal that valued PayPal at approximately $53 billion, but PayPal management believed the offer was insufficient. Stripe and Advent are still discussing strategy.

If the OpenRouter deal is completed, it will be one of the most significant AI infrastructure acquisitions recorded this year.
