World Foundation raises $52.5 million to expand World ID's "human identity" system
On Friday, the nonprofit organization World Foundation announced that it has raised $52.5 million to expand World ID, a "human identity" system launched by Sam Altman's World project. The organization believes that as artificial intelligence agents flood the Internet, verifying human identity will become increasingly critical.
The initial token sale was led by Pantera Capital, with participation from Bain Capital Crypto, Nasdaq-listed companies Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital and Susquehanna Crypto. All WLD tokens sold will be locked up for 12 months. The World Foundation said the funds will be used to promote World ID to organizations, consumers and their artificial intelligence agents. Cosmo Jiang, general partner of Pantera, pointed out that as artificial intelligence accelerates,"the need for human identity verification is becoming increasingly urgent."
World ID allows users to prove that they are unique human beings on a spherical device called Orb through a one-time iris scan without revealing their identity. The ID generated by the scan is stored on the user's mobile phone. The World project was renamed from Worldcoin in 2024 and co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to build a global "proof of personality" system. The World Foundation said this year the technology is being integrated with platforms such as Zoom, Docusign, Okta, Vercel and Tinder, while launching a new version of World ID 4.0 for enterprises that allows external developers to integrate their own credential systems into the framework.
This financing coincides with the third anniversary of the project. The World Foundation said more than 39 million people have joined the network, 18 million of whom have been verified through Orb, and World has processed 475 million identification requests.
World's iris scanning model has encountered regulatory resistance in many countries because of its biometric data processing. Hong Kong ordered it to cease operations in 2024; a Kenyan court ordered it to delete users 'biometric data; and Brazil banned it from paying users for iris scans. Spain had suspended its data collection activities, while South Korea fined the project $830,000 for privacy violations.
Despite this, institutional interest is growing. Eightco, which participated in the investment on Friday, established its first enterprise-level WLD treasury last year, and Grayscale this week applied to launch the first U.S. ETF tied to WLD tokens.
