Coinbase has launched support for USDC payments managed by autonomous artificial intelligence agents on its enterprise-oriented platform, aiming to streamline automated financial transaction processes. The exchange launched the upgrade on July 23, 2026, along with new proxy trading instructions and a software development kit to integrate x402-enabled payment functions into digital services.
Coinbase targets automated payment processes
This week, companies using Coinbase can start receiving USDC directly from AI agents. Under the new settings, every transaction is processed through Coinbase's payment infrastructure, and the addition of x402 simplifies pay-as-you-go application scenarios on the Internet.
Companies can now receive, track, reconcile and withdraw these agent-managed payments through a unified centralized account. The platform's business panel clearly states that eligible USDC balances can earn benefits, and it lists an annualized rate of return of 3.35%. This yield may fluctuate depending on the user's region and platform updates.
Changes in network traffic drive change
Coinbase developed these features in response to the growing trend of network automation. In June this year, automatic visits to pages related to the second-layer blockchain Base developed by Coinbase exceeded human visits for the first time. The company observed that traditional payment workflows rely heavily on manual input, which poses a challenge for autonomous AI services.
With this upgrade, agent-initiated transactions can now be managed together with regular corporate payments. The company pointed out that under this structure, USDC payments made through agents do not pose a refund risk. Coinbase does not directly interfere with transfers between a company and its customers; access depends on the product, user's region, and system requirements.
Features for developers and autonomous agents
Coinbase's latest updates include new real-time tools for agent products, such as market data streams and conditional triggers. AI agents can stream and analyze orders, monitor order books, asset prices and volume fluctuations, and execute buy, sell, or cancel requests based on preset rules.
Developers can add proxy payment capabilities to their APIs, model context protocol servers, or web services through the new CDP x402 software toolkit from the Coinbase Developer Platform. The toolkit includes critical infrastructure and extended functions, eliminating the need for additional set-up to pay for middleware.
The x402 protocol uses the HTTP 402 Payment Required status code to facilitate payments. This setting allows online services to trigger payment requests whenever an AI agent attempts to use a resource or service. Agents confirm payments through USDC and re-send service requests with proof of payment, completing transactions without additional human supervision.
Mini Dictionary: The x402 protocol is an open technology standard used to integrate on-chain payments with Internet services via HTTP 402 response codes, designed to allow APIs and AI proxies to automatically process stablecoin payments during resource requests.
Coinbase initially launched the x402 standard in May 2025 to support payment operations by APIs, applications, and autonomous agents. The standard is designed to integrate payment requests, USDC authorizations and settlement confirmations into one seamless process.
Amazon adopted the x402 protocol in May 2026, adding it to Bedrock Agent Core Payments, allowing compatible AI agents to use USDC tokens to pay for service fees. According to Coinbase, these developments mark a further breakthrough in machine-based and automated payment solutions.
The company has not disclosed expected payments or amounts for its new business features, but emphasized that these enhancements will benefit receiving companies, individual users managing AI agents, and developers building agent-based platforms or tools. Each improvement is designed to support unique players in the growing automated online economy, whether it's processing funds, developing new features, or supervising autonomous agents acting on users 'behalf.
