Through the support of t54.ai, the XRP ledger integrates MasterCard's verifiable intention (VI) standard, thereby improving its ability in the field of artificial intelligence payments. The latest upgrade introduces an x402 mediator for XRP ledgers, which enhances payment processing capabilities and enables AI to conduct authorization and risk assessment before each transaction is completed.
MasterCard verifiable intent integration on XRP ledgers
The x402 mediator was deployed on XRP ledgers in February 2026 and is designed to allow AI agents to purchase online digital goods and services using XRP or RLUSD without an account or API key. Developers can now integrate MasterCard's VI certificates into the x402 payment process. This upgrade allows each transaction to be cryptographically verified, confirming who authorized the payment, the amount of expenditure allowed, and the specific goods or services purchased.
The system utilizes a built-in risk engine in the XRPL mediator to automatically analyze each payment request to ensure that only properly authorized transactions can proceed. According to t54.ai, the VI standard relies on MasterCard's agent payment system, which provides all the data needed to process transactions initiated by AI agents.
Based on the verifiable intent of the Mastercard agent payment system, it integrates key verification factors-payment authorization, expenditure limits and product identification to support secure automated payments on XRP ledgers.
As artificial intelligence increasingly automates digital processes, the need for infrastructure to support machine-to-machine payments is expected to grow. MasterCard's Machine Proxy Payments (AP4M) is designed to meet this need by enabling machines to perform authorized payments on behalf of users in its global payment network.
Ripple, which is responsible for XRP ledger development and is known for its enterprise-level blockchain solutions, has partnered with MasterCard to participate in the machine agent payment program. The collaboration began in June 2026, and Ripple joined the program to further develop AI-based payment solutions.
XRP ledger achieves proxy transaction milestone
According to data released by t54.ai, the continuous development of the XRP ledger payment ecosystem has processed more than 1.4 million proxy transactions. These transactions are performed through x402 intermediaries within the XRP ledger, marking the rapid expansion of AI-based payment services on the platform.
RippleX Engineering Director J. Akinyele compares the current state of AI payment infrastructure to the early stages of cloud computing. He emphasized that AI agents ultimately need to be able to access payment systems that work seamlessly like current digital communication protocols.
Akinyele explained that reaching the milestone of one million transactions processed shows early but meaningful progress, while acknowledging that the technology is still in the formative stages. He further pointed out that the current achievements are only the beginning of XRP ledger's adoption and expansion of AI-driven payments, and significant progress is expected as the technology matures.
