Circle announced on Monday that it will acquire IBM's blockchain patent portfolio. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Affected by the news, Circle shares rose more than 2% in pre-market trading on Monday.
This patent portfolio covers more than 680 patent families and nearly 1000 authorized patents around the world. Circle said that this acquisition makes it a leader in blockchain patent holding in the United States, and its intellectual property layout directly supports the company's technical foundation for building an Internet financial system.
IBM's blockchain technology has previously focused on supply chain applications, aiming to improve the transparency of tracking when products flow through multiple intermediate links. The research company pointed out that IBM has slowed down the pace of patent applications in recent years, with more than 500 blockchain-related patents filed during its peak period (2018-2019).
Sarah Wilson, Circle's general counsel and corporate secretary, said: "IBM has always been a pioneer in technological innovation, and this acquisition expands Circle's capabilities and helps us further promote the construction of global native Internet financial infrastructure."
