Tether cooperates with the Nairobi Stock Exchange to explore tokenized securities and blockchain infrastructure
Tether has partnered with the Nairobi Securities Exchange to jointly explore tokenized securities, blockchain infrastructure and the broader digital asset market development. The cooperation covers investor education, regulatory compliance, fragmented securities trading and a blockchain settlement system aimed at improving market efficiency.
Under the memorandum of understanding, the two parties will evaluate real-world asset tokenization, USD settlement infrastructure, and financial market modernization opportunities with compliance at its core. The Nairobi Stock Exchange plans to modernize its capital markets with blockchain technology, while the two sides will evaluate systems that can improve transaction efficiency and expand investment opportunities for local and overseas investors.
Under the framework of the agreement, both parties will study how distributed ledger technology supports the issuance and trading of tokenized securities, and evaluate the infrastructure to achieve instant settlement, thereby reducing reliance on traditional post-transaction processes. This move is expected to improve market efficiency while enhancing the accessibility of digital financial services.
In addition, the two parties will conduct investor education programs through seminars, training courses and structured learning programs for brokers, retail investors and other participants who want to gain an in-depth understanding of digital assets and modern capital markets.
Collaborate to explore blockchain infrastructure in Kenya's capital markets
A key goal of this cooperation is to support tokenized securities and fragmented investment opportunities through Tether's Hadron platform. This approach is expected to allow more local and international investors to obtain listed financial products through digital infrastructure.
In addition to expanding investment channels, both parties will also develop an occupancy system that meets Kenya's regulatory requirements. These systems are designed to streamline anti-money laundering and know-your-customer (KYC) processes while ensuring compliance with financial regulatory requirements.
The memorandum also contains plans to evaluate real-world asset tokenization and blockchain-based settlement mechanisms. If implemented, these systems will replace the exchange's existing three-stage settlement process and enable faster transactions. In addition, both parties will study whether USD can be used as a digital settlement layer if regulatory permits.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said that digital assets are expanding from cryptocurrency transactions to cross-border institutional finance. He added that the cooperation aims to improve efficiency while promoting transparency, accountability, privacy protection and secure data management.
Frank Mwiti, CEO of the Nairobi Stock Exchange, said that the cooperation is in line with the exchange's strategic plan from 2025 to 2029. He explained that the initiative will assess technologies that can modernize market infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and expand investment opportunities, while maintaining compliance.
Conclusion
The memorandum establishes a framework for both parties to evaluate tokenized securities and blockchain infrastructure in Kenya's capital markets. The proposed measures are expected to improve settlement efficiency, expand investor engagement, and support the long-term digital transformation of exchanges.
