MoonPay's PayBox embeds encrypted wallets into Claude and ChatGPT to enable instant payment

MoonPay launches PayBox: a payment vault that allows AI agents to really spend money for you

MoonPay officially released PayBox today-a payment vault that can connect to Claude and ChatGPT. It can represent users to complete tasks independently. AI software programs can now truly complete payment operations for you.

Its operating mechanism is quite intuitive. The vault serves as a secure digital vault that stores both encrypted wallets and payment cards. The user requests the chatbot, the AI then arranges the transaction, the user authorizes it using a passkey (a secure digital key stored on the phone or device, such as Face ID used for payment), and the funds are then transferred.

"The card hides the cash, and the mobile phone hides the card. In this era, money disappears in conversation,"MoonPay CEO Ivan Soto-Wright said in a statement. "Billions of AI agents are coming online, each of which needs to securely hold, transfer and spend money. "

Prior to this, Claude and ChatGPT could study investments, compare air ticket prices, and plan purchase plans, but could not complete the actual transaction. Users still need to open the browser, log in to the payment service, and complete the operation in person. PayBox aims to fill this gap.

supports multiple integrated functions on the first day of launch: restaurant reservations, ticket purchases and shopping services from major online retailers. Users can also exchange tokens, bridge funds across chains, and route funds to DeFi protocols such as Aave.

PayBox supports Solana and seven EVM-compatible blockchains (including Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum and Polygon) when launched. It is also compatible with the x402 protocol-an open payment protocol developed by Coinbase and donated to the Linux Foundation and now supported by Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify, AWS and Anthropic-which allows AI agents to make payments to any service that accepts agents to initiate transactions.

The launch of PayBox did not happen overnight. MoonPay has been laying out for this for most of 2026. In March this year, the company released an open wallet standard for AI agents, which was supported by PayPal, the Ethereum Foundation and the Solana Foundation. In May, an application was launched that allowed users to purchase cryptocurrency within ChatGPT, but at that time they still had to jump to the checkout page to complete the transaction. In June, a desktop application was released that connects Claude and Codex directly to a crypto wallet.

PayBox's infrastructure comes from Sodot, an Israeli key management startup that MoonPay completed in April this year in an all-stock deal of approximately $100 million. Sodot's technology has secured more than $50 billion in assets and 10 million wallets for customers including eToro and BitGo.

Wallet keys are split using multi-party computing-a cryptographic technique that splits the private key into independent fragments held by different parties, ensuring that no single entity has separate access to funds. These fragments are stored in trusted execution environments-isolated areas of hardware where sensitive data cannot be accessed even by the server running the software.

According to the company's announcement,"Wallet keys are split in a hardware-isolated environment through multi-party computing, so no device, session, or participant-whether it is MoonPay or an AI agent-can hold the full key or complete the signature alone. "

Card payments are routed through Visa's agent business protocol. This means that AI will never see the user's real card number when processing payments, thereby reducing the risk of credential disclosure and abuse.

MoonPay positions PayBox as a solution to structural problems in existing products. "Existing products force a trade-off between convenience and control: To allow an agent to trade independently, users often need to authorize it to fully custody funds and trust a single party-the platform, agent or custody wallet-to securely hold and transfer funds," the company said. "PayBox is designed to ensure that no participant, including MoonPay and AI itself, has unilateral access to users 'funds or credentials. "
