Key Points

Strategy announced a more flexible Bitcoin capital allocation plan, and MSTR shares rose 4.73%.

Strategy has suspended Bitcoin purchases for its third week while raising its dollar reserves to US$3.75 billion.

Strategy will allocate future capital between Bitcoin purchases and cash reserves based on market conditions.

MSTR shares rose after Strategy outlined major changes in the way it manages its Bitcoin library and allocates capital. The company confirmed that it will continue to sell Bitcoin when management believes it will benefit its balance sheet.

The company also stated that future capital raising will no longer be used entirely to purchase Bitcoin. Instead, Strategy plans to allocate new capital between Bitcoin acquisitions and U.S. dollar reserves based on market conditions.

Strategy's announcement came after the company had not made any Bitcoin purchases for a week, extending the purchase suspension to three weeks and expanding its cash reserves.

MSTR stock prices rise after Strategy disclosure

Increased buying power during the July 30 trading session on Thursday pushed MSTR shares higher to nearly $98 before closing slightly. However, pre-market trading on Friday, July 31 showed the stock price at US$95.13, down 2.67%, indicating a cautious market reaction after regular trading ended.

MSTR shares rise as Strategy revises Bitcoin allocation plan

Strategy (MSTR) said on a second-quarter earnings conference call that it will continue to sell Bitcoin as long as management believes it is beneficial to the company's financial goals. The company said the proceeds from the sale could be used to replenish U.S. dollar reserves, pay preferred stock dividends, cover interest expenses and support authorized share buybacks.

Management also announced that future capital raising will no longer be used entirely to purchase Bitcoin. Instead, Strategy will dynamically allocate the proceeds between Bitcoin positions and U.S. dollar reserves based on market conditions.

The company added that loans backed by Bitcoin are not currently considered due to counterparty risk and margin risk.

This adjustment deviates from Strategy's previous practice of using almost all of its new capital to expand its Bitcoin holdings. The company said the new framework provides greater liquidity management flexibility while supporting financial commitments.

Strategy extends suspension on Bitcoin purchases

Strategy (MSTR)'s statement follows the company's latest documents showing that Strategy did not make any Bitcoin purchases or sales between July 20 and July 26. This period marks the third consecutive week that the company has not increased its Bitcoin holdings.

Strategy reports that its Bitcoin portfolio remains unchanged at 843,775 BTC. The Bitcoin finance company purchased these positions at a cost of approximately $63.69 billion, with an average purchase price of approximately $75,476 per Bitcoin.

The company did not expand its Bitcoin position, but chose to focus on increasing liquidity. Strategy sold 5.42 million shares of Class A common stock, earning net income of approximately $544.5 million. These transactions increased its dollar reserves to $3.75 billion.

The earnings update also confirmed that Strategy intends to continue to sell bitcoin as appropriate to strengthen reserves, fulfill dividend obligations and support share repurchase programs.

At the same time, management pointed out that future capital allocation will strike a balance between Bitcoin acquisitions and cash reserves, rather than using all new funds for additional cryptocurrency purchases.
