Ripple custody unlocking is released in three batches
On August 1, before the ledger released 1 billion XRPs, Ripple had returned 700 million XRPs to custody contracts, which reduced the new supply to 300 million.
Key points:
Two custody locks covering 200 million and 500 million XRPs respectively were cleared before the monthly routine release, breaking the regular order. The unlocking will be carried out in three batches, including 500 million, 300 million and 200 million tokens respectively, with a total value of approximately US$1.08 billion. Net new supply remained around 300 million pieces, and XRP stabilized at around $1.0818 after hitting a low of $1.0480.
Ripple escrow unlocks are released in three batches
Ledger records show that two escrow locks-one covering 200 million XRPs and the other covering 500 million XRPs-were cleared on August 1 before the monthly routine allocation reached the company. Subsequently, the unlocking was carried out in three batches, namely 500 million, 300 million and 200 million tokens, with a value of approximately US$1.08 billion based on the current day's price. The tracking service flagged the transfers a day later.
This sequence breaks the regular process because companies typically wait a few days after release before pushing unused tokens back into new contracts with a later expiration date. Ripple will return 700 million coins each month in 2026, keeping the net increase at around 300 million coins, which is equivalent to an increase of approximately 0.48% in the number of tokens in circulation. August is the eighth release planned this year.
Analysts see early lock-in as a precautionary sign to reassure investors who had expected a seasonal sell-off, which is often accompanied by the release of a new batch of 1 billion coins. Remove most of the batches first at the beginning of the month, eliminating supply pressures at the beginning of a month that had long been unfavorable for the token. Traders now pay as much attention to locked transactions on the ledger as they pay to the unlocking itself.
The tokens released are used for operations, liquidity services, developer funding and partner incentives, so the impact of net numbers on the market is more important than the 1 billion macro numbers in circulation every month. As with several releases earlier this year, the market's response to the August release was muted because the plan was public and traders had long incorporated monthly rhythms into their models.
XRP's August performance sparks supply discussions
The custody plan dates back to December 2017, when Ripple locked 55 billion XRPs in contracts that expired one by one on the first day of each month. There are still more than 32 billion tokens under these arrangements, with a circulating supply of approximately 62.5 billion tokens, and a fixed total supply of 100 billion tokens. Since the program was launched, lock-in inventories have steadily decreased.
August damaged holders many times: XRP fell 26.6% in 2023, 9.17% the following year, and another 8.15% in 2025, with a median return of minus 6.15% over the 13-year period. So far this month, the token has broken this rhythm. After hitting a low of $1.0480 on the evening of August 1, it has rebounded to around $1.0818, still recording a 1.93% increase from the 2.11% increase in July.
