The Bitcoin wallet that has been silent for 14 years suddenly transferred US$3.23 million, sparking market speculation.
A Bitcoin address that has been silent for more than 14 years suddenly transferred its entire balance-49.97 BTC this week, a move that has raised questions from market observers. The transfer occurred in block 961331, bringing one of Bitcoin's oldest wallets back into the spotlight.
The whale wakes up 14 years later
Blockchain data shows that this address, which starts with "1EBz", originally received the bitcoins on July 16, 2011, when the BTC price was below $15. Based on an average purchase price of approximately US$10 each, the total investment at the time was approximately US$500.
August 6, 2026, 20:14 UTC, the original wallet transferred its entire balance to a new address through a single transaction. Based on Bitcoin's current price of approximately $65000, these positions are worth $3.23 million-a staggering 634347% increase over 15 years.
Transfers of funds as ancient as this are not common because most early Bitcoin participants have either spent, lost or had no access to their wallets. These silent addresses are sometimes called "Satoshi Era" wallets, are occasionally reactivated and often attract widespread attention from the crypto community.
Funds flow to institutions
Data from Arkham Intelligence shows that the target wallet then transfers funds to an address associated with FalconX. FalconX is a well-known crypto master broker serving institutional clients and trading companies. FalconX is not open to retail customers, which suggests that the size and purpose of the deal may be related to institutional activity.
Although the transfer cannot be confirmed as a sale, it may indicate preparation for a transaction, mortgage or integration into a safer custodian. In several past cases, when old coins that had been dormant for years were transferred, the assets also ended up flowing to brokers or custodians rather than directly to retail exchanges.
For every day Bitcoin remains immovable, it will accumulate a day of "coin age". When a large amount of accumulated bitcoin is transferred after years of holding, the "coin day destruction" indicator will soar sharply, indicating significant activity by long-term holders.
Such transfers could spark market speculation as to whether the owner intends to sell or is simply restructuring the assets. The reactivation of large silent wallets may also affect market sentiment, especially during periods of active trading.
Trend of reactivation of ancient wallets
This incident is part of an ongoing trend. Similar cases include: in 2023, a giant whale from the Satoshi Nakamoto era transferred US$11 million after 12 years of silence; another time, a coin that had been silent for more than a decade was transferred. In 2024, nearly 50,000 bitcoins (worth approximately US$2 billion) were transferred, and analysts believe institutional rebalancing is one reason. There have been many occasions in 2025 where giant whales have transferred billions of dollars in assets, and the funds usually flow to professional crypto infrastructure rather than being quickly cashed out on exchanges.
In most cases, these transfers are directed to industry custodians or service providers to cash out rather than individual early holders. The motives behind the moves remain unclear, with possible explanations including enhanced security or asset management needs.
As traders track such trends, some platforms focused on connecting the traditional financial and crypto worlds are introducing new ways to diversify their asset portfolios. By integrating physical assets directly onto the blockchain, users can directly access stocks of major U.S. companies and commodities such as gold and silver from their crypto wallets, while the platform will find optimal market prices to achieve seamless transactions.
As of Friday, these reactivated bitcoins were still at new receiving addresses, and market participants were closely monitoring any further trading movements.
