Bitget reopens Bitcoin withdrawal four days after encountering a $387.5 million hacker attack

On September 24, Bitget detected unauthorized transfer of funds in some of its hot money packages, and immediately suspended the withdrawal service and launched an investigation. CEO Gracy Chen initially estimated the loss at $351.6 million, but later revised it upwards to $387.5 million. She made it clear that the cold wallet funds were safe and that the exchange's more than US$464 million in user protection funds were enough to cover the loss.

Chen pointed out that the attacker circumvented the transfer verification mechanism by invading the back-end wallet system and using forged transaction data, but did not steal the private key. To this end, Bitget hired two security companies, Mandiant and SlowMist, to assist in the investigation, reported the case to law enforcement, and set up a reward to recover stolen funds.

Progress in gradual restoration of coin withdrawal services and security fixes

On Monday, Bitget launched a plan to restore the coin withdrawal service in phases. According to arrangements, the BTC withdrawal function on the Bitcoin network has returned to normal at 08:00 UTC time on September 28. The exchange said the vulnerability has been fixed, no unauthorized transfer records have been found since the attack was contained, and user balances have not been affected.

Chen added that the company will replenish the protection fund to a benchmark level of US$300 million within a week. Bitget emphasized that the restoration of the withdrawal function was carried out after additional security inspections of the withdrawal infrastructure. The incident is still under control and the account balance remains complete.

行业联动与用户反应
