Zcash (ZEC) is trading at close to $578, and the strong recovery has made it one of the best performing large-cap assets in cryptocurrencies this summer.

Zcash (ZEC) is currently trading at close to $578, continuing the strong rebound. This privacy coin has become one of the best performing large-cap assets in cryptocurrencies this summer. The rise follows ZEC experienced turmoil in June-prices plunged more than 40% after developers disclosed a serious flaw in its online blocked trading system. And just a few weeks later, an Ironwood upgrade aimed at completely fixing the vulnerability was coming.

Key Points

ZEC is trading in the range of US$573 to US$578, up more than 20% in the past week and still about 15% below the local high of about US$744 in November 2025.

On June 5, 2026, a serious vulnerability was discovered in Zcash's Orchard shielded pool, causing the price to plummet by more than 40%. The developer completed the fix within a few days.

Ironwood's network upgrade introduces a new shielded pool with a supply cap mechanism, with a target activation time of approximately July 28, 2026.

Researchers at the Tachyon project say they are close to completing a formal mathematical proof that Ironwood does not have the same fake vulnerability.

Open interest in futures contracts has climbed to about US$980 million, while funding rates have increased, indicating that new funds are moving into long positions.

Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn attracted attention for publicly criticizing Coinbase for promoting the prediction market to inexperienced users.

Incident Review: Orchard Vulnerability and Market Impact

On June 5, 2026, security researchers disclosed a serious flaw in Zcash's Orchard shielding pool. Orchard is the core privacy mechanism that allows users to send and receive ZECs without revealing the sender, recipient, or amount. The vulnerability, which has allegedly been undiscovered since 2022, could theoretically allow attackers to forge ZECs out of thin air without detection, because Orchard's strong privacy guarantees make post-facto audits of blocking supplies mathematically impossible.

The developer fixed the vulnerability within days and never confirmed any evidence of exploitation. But the disclosure alone was enough to shake confidence: The Block reported that ZEC lost more than 50% of its value in the following days, falling from about $630 to about $303. Due to Orchard's privacy design, it was impossible to determine whether counterfeit money had actually been minted-an uncertainty that severely depressed market sentiment throughout June.

Shortly after, another unrelated issue surfaced: a separate vulnerability (severity score of 9.2) traced as CVE-2026-34202 allowed a single malformed Orchard transaction to crash any accessible node, posing a denial of service risk, and causing a consensus divergence between Zcash's two node implementations (zcashd and Zebra). The vulnerability has also been fixed.

Ironwood upgrade and Tachyon project

In response to the Orchard vulnerability, Zcash developers moved quickly and finalized consensus rule changes for a new upgrade named Ironwood. The plan, confirmed by developer Sean Bowe in early July, introduces a new shielded pool that reuses Orchard circuits but increases restrictions on the circulation supply of ZECs through the network's existing "turn-gate" mechanism-ensuring that the number of ZECs that can be traded never exceeds what it should be.

Zcash Open Development Laboratory has set the activation time at the end of July, with multiple sources citing a block height of 3,428,143 and a target date of approximately July 28, 2026, but co-founder Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn warned that the specific timetable may still change. The upgrade will allow users to migrate funds from the old Orchard pool to Ironwood, gradually reducing exposure to legacy vulnerabilities, and developers say it will ultimately provide evidence that no counterfeiting occurred.

In addition, the Tachyon project, which focuses on formally verifying the security of the Zcash shielded pool architecture, is said to be close to completing a mathematical proof that Ironwood does not suffer the same risk of counterfeiting as Orchard. Wilcox views this development as a key factor in restoring market confidence.

Price recovery and market structure

Since reaching a bottom near about US$303 in early June, ZEC has more than doubled, becoming the leader among the large-cap altcoins in July. Zcash regained its level of $500 in the second week of July, and then moved towards $600. On July 16, the token broke through the multi-week consolidation range and the rally accelerated. This trend echoes the rising trend of overall risk appetite for major assets.

Technical indicators remain generally bullish in this round of gains: ZEC has regained the 26th, 50th, 100th and 200th index moving averages, and the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has remained in the mid-to-high range of more than 60 to below 70, and has not yet entered the extremely overbought area. Traders are focusing on $600 as the next major resistance level, with band highs at the end of 2025 between $650 and $700.

The derivatives market also reflects the recovery. According to CoinGlass data cited in multiple reports, open interest in ZEC futures climbed to about $980 million in mid-July, a one-day gain of more than 20%, while funding rates turned positive-indicating that traders are willing to pay a premium to hold long positions.

Governance and Ethics: Wilcox vs. Coinbase

In addition to the technological recovery, Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn publicly criticized Coinbase for aggressively promoting the sports and Bitcoin price prediction markets to inexperienced users in late June, a move that sparked controversy in the cryptocurrency industry. The comments, posted on Platform X, characterized the behavior as exploitation of financially vulnerable retail participants and sparked discussions about predictive marketing ethics inside and outside the industry. The incident further strengthens Zcash's positioning as an outspoken, principle-driven founder of the project, even as the network is experiencing its most serious security incident to date.
