World Foundation raises US$52.5 million through strategic token sales to accelerate World ID identity network deployment
World Foundation raised US$52.5 million through strategic WLD token sales to expand its World ID identity network, with all purchased tokens locked up for one year. The nonprofit said the funding will support enterprise-level applications of World ID-more than 39 million users have joined the network, of which more than 18 million have completed Orb verification. The financing comes as World continues to expand globally, while the project is also facing continued regulatory review and new market concerns about the concentration of WLD positions after Grayscale filed an ETF application.
Financing details and token usage
The World Foundation announced on Friday that it has completed its first round of delivery of its strategic WLD token sale, raising $52.5 million from a group of cryptocurrency-focused investors to support the expansion of its "proof of humanity" infrastructure. The nonprofit said all WLD tokens sold in the transaction will be locked up for one year. Pantera Capital led the round of financing, with Bain Capital Crypto, WLD treasury firm Eightco Holdings (Nasdaq: ORBS), Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto and several other investors also participating. Although the foundation described the financing as a "first-round delivery", it did not confirm whether a subsequent round was planned. When asked if there would be more token sales, a spokesman declined to comment.
Unlike equity financing, the foundation stated that the WLD purchased in this transaction will only be used for the World Network ecosystem. According to the group, the tokens do not represent ownership of Tools for Humanity, the company responsible for developing the project's software and hardware, nor do they confer rights to profits or return on investment.
Use of funds: Promote enterprise-level applications The
Foundation stated that the new funds from this financing will be used to expand the use of World ID in enterprises, consumers and AI agents in the international market. The announcement comes as the group said it is entering a new phase after the protocol construction phase of the past three years, focusing on increasing the use of its identity network in the real world.
As the capabilities of artificial intelligence systems increase, the World Foundation says the market demand for technology that can distinguish real humans from online automated agents is rising. World allows users to verify that they are unique human beings through a one-time Orb scan, thereby generating a World ID that does not reveal its identity. According to the foundation, users save World IDs on their devices, and the verification process relies on advanced cryptography and anonymized multi-party computing, technologies that have been open source to protect privacy.
Cosmo Jiang, general partner at Pantera Capital, said the acceleration of AI development has increased the need for "human proof" technology as more and more companies are looking for ways to verify online identities. He added that as corporate adoption rates grow, the investment company will continue to support World's long-term mission.
World ID 4.0 Release and Ecosystem Integration
While announcing the financing, the foundation also mentioned the release of World ID 4.0, saying the version is specifically designed for enterprise-level deployments. The latest version allows developers to build additional identity credentials using zero-knowledge certificates and integrate them into the broader World ID framework. According to the organization, World ID has been integrated with services such as Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel and Tinder. The foundation also said that more than 39 million people have joined the World Network and that more than 18 million users have completed Orb verification. Since its launch, the network has processed more than 475 million World ID certificates, which are generated when users verify identity when accessing supported applications or services.
The organization also said that applications from digital advertising and online dating to voting platforms, creative marketplaces and video communication services without a "human proof" infrastructure will face increasing challenges from AI-generated content, synthetic identities and deep counterfeiting.
Review of Previous Financing
The latest funding comes after another major funding round was completed earlier this year. In May, the World Foundation raised $135 million through a strategic WLD sale led by Andreessen Horowitz and Bain Capital Crypto. At the time, the foundation said the proceeds would be used to expand the World ID ecosystem, and investors purchased the WLD tokens at market value. After the announcement, WLD rose about 10% in one day, with trading volume and derivatives activity increasing significantly. According to the organization, including the latest round of funding, the World Foundation and related entities have raised approximately $200 million through WLD token sales. In addition, Tools for Humanity has raised approximately $240 million through venture equity financing. To date, the World Ecosystem has raised approximately US$492.5 million.
Regulatory and governance challenges coexist
While the network continues to grow, regulatory review remains a recurring challenge for the project. Authorities in Spain, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines have investigated, restricted, suspended or fined some of the World's biometric authentication services, citing concerns about privacy, user consent and data protection. The foundation said it will continue to communicate with regulators as the network expands to more markets.
At the same time, governance and token ownership issues have also attracted attention due to recent regulatory documents. A registration statement filed by Grayscale for its proposed spot Worldcoin ETF disclosed that as of filing, the top 100 wallets controlled approximately 90% of the WLD's circulating supply. The asset management company listed this concentration of ownership as a significant risk for potential investors, while noting that network governance is still materially influenced by the World Foundation. Grayscale's document also points out that World Chain currently relies on centralized sorters, while upgrade permissions are still jointly held by relevant entities of the World Foundation, Tools for Humanity and Optimism. The document further states that Orb equipment is still mainly produced and distributed under the guidance of Tools for Humanity. The ETF proposal was made after Nasdaq filed an application to list the Grayscale Worldcoin ETF under the code GWLD. If approved by U.S. regulators, the trust will hold the WLD directly and provide investors with exposure to the token through a traditional brokerage account without direct custody.
