Ethereum performed strongly in July and re-entered investors 'attention.
Ethereum showed strong performance in July, once again attracting investors' attention. ETH rose about 20.3% in July, setting its best monthly return in nearly a year, according to CoinGlass. During the same period, Bitcoin rose by about 9%, and Ethereum's strong performance was particularly eye-catching. However, historical data presents a different picture that may limit investor optimism. Because for Ethereum, August was one of the most volatile periods in history, with both large increases and significant declines. So, after a strong performance in July, can Ethereum continue its gains in August?
Ethereum outperformed Bitcoin in July
Ethereum experienced a difficult period in the first half of 2026. At the beginning of the year, it fell 17.5% in January and 19.8% in February, followed by a limited rebound in March and April. It turned downward again in May, and fell sharply by about 21.7% in June, making it one of the worst monthly declines of the year. It is against this background that July became an important turning point for Ethereum. ETH fell to $1500 at the beginning of the month, and then rebounded strongly in the following weeks, climbing to about $1980. The end of the month closed at approximately $1900. As a result, Ethereum ended July with a gain of 20.32%, setting its strongest monthly performance in nearly a year. During the same period, Bitcoin's monthly return was about 9%, indicating that Ethereum outperformed market-leading cryptocurrencies in July.
How did Ethereum perform in August?
Although July data seems strong, CoinGlass's historical statistics show that August has not always been favorable for Ethereum. In the past few years, ETH has seen significant increases in August, especially by 92.86% in 2017, 25.32% in 2020, 35.62% in 2021, and 18.78% in 2025. However, the other side of the coin is equally worthy of attention. Ethereum fell 34.79% in 2018, 21.31% in 2019, and 22.21% in 2024, disappointing investors. These data suggest that August was one of the most unpredictable periods in Ethereum's history.
What factors will affect Ethereum prices?
Although historical performance can provide important clues to investors, this alone cannot determine future price movements. Ethereum's performance in the coming weeks will continue to be influenced by factors such as global risk appetite, macroeconomic conditions, ETF demand and capital inflows into the cryptocurrency market. So while July's strong rally raised investor expectations, August's trend will not be determined solely by historical statistics. After a strong July for Ethereum, historical data shows that August may bring both major opportunities and a sharp correction. Therefore, in the coming period, investors not only need to pay attention to past performance, but also need to pay close attention to the latest market developments and demand prospects.
