Ethereum hit its best monthly gain of the year. Can it continue its gains in August?

Summer is usually not the most exciting period for the cryptocurrency market, and the past month or so has proved this. Despite this, Ethereum managed to become one of the few (re-) rising stars, with prices rising by about 20% and hitting local highs.

Historical data shows that August has been a controversial month for the largest altcoin. We will analyze this data to try to understand what variables may be hidden in the next 30 days or so.

Ethereum saw a sharp rise in July

The second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap experienced severe shocks at the end of 2025 and was equally painful in early 2026. The difficulties began after hitting a record high in August last year, when prices were suppressed and closed down for six consecutive months. The months with the largest declines were November (-22.38%), January (-17.52%) and February (-19.81%).

Then there was a slight rebound in March and April, with both increases of about 7%. However, bears made a comeback in May, with prices falling 11%; in June, the entire market was extremely bearish, with Ethereum plummeting 21.7%. As a result, market expectations for a July rebound are high. Historically, July was not the best month for Ethereum, but all rising July recorded double-digit gains.

July 2026 did not disappoint. The altcoin rebounded from an early downturn, when prices dropped to around $1500, before soaring to $1980. Although blocked at this level, it eventually closed at about $1900, which represented a solid rise of about 20%. This performance far exceeded Bitcoin's monthly increase, which only rose modestly by 9%.

How will August interpret?

Despite some warning signs about the short-term price trend of Ethereum, August has brought significant gains in the past few years. Clearly, 2017 was particularly prominent, with the token soaring nearly 93%. In 2020, it increased by 25.32%, and in 2021, it increased by 35.62%. The increase in August 2025 was also double-digit, and Ethereum successfully broke the previous record in history that month.

On the other side of the coin, the other six August months since 2016 have been down. The most painful examples include Ethereum's collapse of nearly 35% during the bear market in 2018, a 21.31% decline a year later, and a 22.21% decline in 2024.
