WBTC migrates to Chainlink CCIP, BitGo upgrades infrastructure
This migration stems from concerns about the LayerZero bridging security model. The adoption scale of Chainlink CCIP has reached nearly US$15 billion in assets.
BitGo has selected Chainlink CCIP as a cross-chain solution for Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), migrating this US$7.4 billion asset away from LayerZero's cross-chain standard. The migration of WBTC makes Chainlink CCIP the exclusive interoperability solution for BitGo's future assets. The move follows the industry's high attention to bridging security after the $292 million attack on KelpDAO.
WBTC migration expands the scale of Chainlink cross-chain applications
WBTC migration is one of the largest infrastructure changes involving tokenized Bitcoin assets. BitGo said the transition will align WBTC deployment with Chainlink's cross-chain token standards. According to BitGo, the company will retain control of token contracts, transfer limits and operational settings. The new architecture allows BitGo to directly manage security parameters while using Chainlink CCIP for blockchain transfers.
"Safety always comes first. BitGo is migrating from its original solution and selecting Chainlink CCIP as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure provider to unify WBTC and all future BitGo issued assets onto a single institution-level interoperability standard."
This shift allows WBTC to join the growing number of assets adopting Chainlink infrastructure. Chainlink representatives said that the total value of assets that have been publicly announced to be relocated from LayerZero is close to $15 billion.
WBTC remains the largest encapsulated Bitcoin token, accounting for approximately 45% of the encapsulated Bitcoin market. The asset is widely used in decentralized financial platforms that need to gain Bitcoin exposure on other networks.
WBTC migration comes on the heels of bridging security concerns
In the wake of the KelpDAO bridging vulnerability incident, multiple projects re-evaluated cross-chain infrastructure. The incident involved a $292 million loss caused by a LayerZero-driven bridging configuration. Chainlink said CCIP uses a network of independent security review node operators and provides functions such as rate limiting and transfer control, aiming to reduce risks in cross-chain transactions.
LayerZero has updated its security framework after the vulnerability occurred. Previous analysis found that many applications use limited validator configurations, which increases the risk of a single point of failure. At the same time, BitGo is expanding its institutional infrastructure beyond managed services. The company recently launched new tools focusing on money management, asset flow and digital asset security.
The migration of WBTC will not change the ownership of token contracts, and BitGo will continue to maintain control over WBTC operations. The company has not disclosed whether other assets using LayerZero will follow the same migration path.
