Ethereum spot prices rose, but futures trading volume fell sharply.

Ethereum spot prices rose, while futures trading activity on mainstream centralized exchanges shrank sharply. In the five days from August 1 to August 5, Ethereum futures trading volume recorded a double-digit decline, but ETH prices still maintained an upward trend during the same period.

Futures participation runs counter to price gains.

From August 1 to August 5, Binhang's Ethereum futures trading volume fell from US$9 billion to US$7.5 billion, a drop of 16.7%. At the same time, Ethereum futures trading volume on other exchanges fell to $11.8 billion, a drop of 17.5%, from $14.3 billion.

The decline in trading activity highlights the significant divergence between price movements and derivatives trading. Although spot demand for Ethereum appears stable, overall interest and leverage use among traders in the futures market remain sluggish. Market analysts point out that this pattern is different from previous rallies-past price surges have often been accompanied by a surge in futures participation.

Ethereum prices rose despite fewer traders opening new positions, indicating that the rally was not driven by increased risk appetite in the futures market.

But a decline in futures trading volume does not automatically mean a decrease in trading leverage. However, the current data does align with futures traders 'more conservative attitude towards holding positions than in previous periods of market volatility.

Earlier this year, Ethereum experienced a sharp decline, with the price falling from about $2400 to $1550. That correction came after a previous surge in futures activity, especially on platforms other than Binance.

Binance futures market share climbs

On April 19, Binance Ethereum futures trading volume was US$3.4 billion, while all other exchanges totaled US$22 billion. As of August 5, the total trading volume of Ethereum futures on various exchanges dropped by approximately 24% compared with April. Non-Binance platforms saw a more severe decline, with trading volume on these exchanges falling 46% from April levels.

In contrast, Binance's futures trading volume has soared. Trading volume in Ethereum futures on the exchange increased by approximately 121% from April levels, partially offsetting widespread declines on other exchanges. This shift has led to a change in the market landscape: Binance now accounts for a larger share of global Ethereum futures trading volume.

The overall decline in trading activity on non-Binance exchanges has depressed total futures market trading volume, and rising Binance data now has a far greater impact on market dynamics than earlier this year.

Binance is one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, providing spot and derivative trading services to users around the world.

Appendix: Comparison of Changes in Trading Volume

On April 19, Binance Ethereum futures trading volume was US$3.4 billion; on August 5, it was US$7.5 billion, a change of +121%. The non-Binance exchange was US$22 billion on April 19; it was US$11.8 billion on August 5, a change of-46%. All exchanges combined were $25.4 billion on April 19;$19.3 billion on August 5, a change of-24%.

As of the end of the statistical period, Ethereum closed at US$1,901.50, up 1.43% in 24 hours, but down 1.04% in the past week. Ethereum's 24-hour transaction volume is approximately US$8.47 billion.
