TLDR: Futures trading volume generally declined on major exchanges.
Binance activity diverges from the overall market trend.
From August 1 to 5, Bindian's Ethereum futures trading volume fell by 16.7%, while other exchanges fell by 17.5%. Despite declining derivatives participation on major exchanges, Ethereum prices rose to $1,901.50. Futures trading volume on non-Binance platforms was 46% lower than April levels, before Ethereum prices fell sharply. Since April, Binance's futures trading volume has increased by 121%, reshaping the structure of the exchange market.
Ethereum prices continued to climb despite slowing futures trading activity on major exchanges, highlighting the widening gap between spot price gains and derivatives participation. Between August 1 and August 5, total futures trading volume on Binance and other centralized exchanges fell by double digits, but Ethereum prices rose during the same period. This pattern suggests that this rally has not been accompanied by a corresponding increase in leverage or trader participation in the futures market.
Futures trading volume generally declined on major exchanges.
From August 1 to August 5, Binanhang's Ethereum futures trading volume dropped from US$9 billion to US$7.5 billion, a decrease of 16.7%. Non-Binance exchanges fell even more sharply, with total trading volume falling from US$14.3 billion to US$11.8 billion during the same period, a decrease of 17.5%.

Despite reduced trading activity, Ethereum prices continued to rise. The divergence suggests that the current rise is not driven by increased participation in derivatives. Traders did not increase futures exposure accordingly as prices rose, while spot demand appeared to remain stable. This gap does not necessarily signal an imminent reversal. However, it does suggest that the recent price rise has not been accompanied by a surge in futures positions that has been common in past rallies. Falling trading volumes in itself does not confirm a reduction in leverage, but the trend is consistent with a more conservative stance of traders taking positions.
This contrasts with the situation before Ethereum fell from about $2,400 to $1,550 earlier this year. The previous decline occurred after a period of more active futures activity in the market, especially on non-Binance platforms.
Binance activity diverges from overall market trends
On April 19, before Ethereum's sharp correction, Binance's futures trading volume was US$3.4 billion, while the total trading volume on all other exchanges reached US$22 billion. The total market trading volume that day was US$25.4 billion, dominated by non-Binance platforms. By August 5, total futures trading volume on exchanges fell by about 24% from April levels. This decline is unevenly distributed among different platforms, with changes in one exchange having a greater impact on the overall landscape.
Trading volume on non-Binance exchanges fell 46% from April levels, the largest decline in the current data set. Binance showed the opposite trend, with its trading volume rising by approximately 121% from April levels. As a result, the current market structure is more concentrated on Binance than during previous sell-off periods. Weak participation on other exchanges led to an overall decline in total futures volume.
As of writing, Ethereum was trading at US$1,901.50, up 1.43% in the past 24 hours. The asset has fallen 1.04% in the past seven days, with 24-hour trading volume approaching $8.47 billion.
