After a volatile July of ETF performance, Bitcoin funds opened August with strong momentum, attracting more than US$800 million in inflows in the first week.
This coincided with the recovery in underlying asset prices-BTC climbed from a monthly low of $62,200 on Monday to above $65,000 on Friday.
Best week since mid-April
The market started July with high expectations, with investors withdrawing more than $2.4 billion from spot Bitcoin ETFs in May and another $4.5 billion in June. Although there were many outstanding days in July, the month ended up with only a net inflow of US$172.43 million, a mediocre performance. As a result, in the July capital inflow competition, the Bitcoin ETF lost to the Ethereum ETF.
On August 3 alone, these funds attracted nearly $170 million. This followed by inflows of $211.49 million on Tuesday,$244.42 million on Wednesday,$128.69 million on Thursday, and $98.85 million on Friday. At this point, a perfect full-week net inflow week was completed, with a total amount of US$853.54 million, actually exceeding the total of the previous four weeks.
More importantly, this was the best week since mid-April, when Bitcoin funds were on the peak, at one point approaching $1 billion. It was also the third-best weekly performance of the year, and the record remains held for the week ended January 16, when ETFs attracted $1.42 billion.
The price performance for BTC over the past week has also been quite favorable. Perhaps driven by ETF inflows and weaker-than-expected U.S. employment data, the asset rose from $62,200 on Monday to $65,400 on Friday.
Ethereum ETF continues its gains
Unlike the spot Bitcoin ETF, the Ethereum ETF did not show a full-week net outflow in July, but ended with a net inflow of US$365 million. They were equally impressive in the first week of August, attracting nearly $245 million.
It was not optimistic at the beginning of the week, with investors withdrawing $11.42 million. However, over the next four trading days, they changed their attitude: inflows of $53.75 million on Tuesday,$60.86 million on Wednesday,$92.15 million on Thursday, and $49.6 million on Friday. As a result, cumulative net inflows increased to US$11.46 billion from US$11.21 billion last week.
ETH prices also rose about 3% month-on-week, and are now trading steadily above $1920 after falling to around $1800 on Monday.
