Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin shared a revised roadmap that compares the original plan with the current development framework known as "Strawmap." The update reflects changes in technology priorities and reveals several concepts that did not appear in earlier planning documents.

Quantum Security and Privacy Reshaping Ethereum Roadmap

According to Buterin's announcement, the Ethereum Roadmap now lists quantum-resistant infrastructure as one of its top priorities. This is in sharp contrast to 2023, when quantum security issues received much less attention in network planning documents. Since then, post-quantum extension has become a decisive feature of ongoing protocol development.

Buterin details several additions that support this quantum-first direction. LeanSPHINCS signature and aggregation technology now appears in the updated Ethereum roadmap, along with the zkzk framework. When the original roadmap was released three years ago, neither concept had yet taken a workable form.

The importance of privacy protection in the current framework has also increased significantly. Key random numbers, recent roots, and some elements of FOCIL are now core components. Streamlining privacy pools and wormhole mechanisms extend this privacy-first approach to broader protocol architectures.

He wrote that as development progresses, Ethereum will put user privacy first. The statement marks a deeper shift in the way the network handles user protection. In the updated Ethereum roadmap, privacy is seen as a fundamental element rather than an additional feature.

Native Rollup and new architecture point the way forward

Native Rollup is a major addition missing from the 2023 release. Buterin explained that previous SNARK technology was not mature enough to support this concept. Recent advances in zero-knowledge proof have made native Rollup a realistic short-term goal.

Blob and Gas futures have also entered the Ethereum roadmap as new mechanisms. When the original roadmap was drawn up in 2023, these tools did not exist conceptually. Their addition addresses changing needs for network capacity and predictable transaction costs.

Buterin describes the expanding design space surrounding the future of EVM. LeanISA and RISC-V are major candidates for a more concise execution architecture. These systems may eventually run alongside or underneath existing EVM structures.

The new state type marks a clear paradigm shift rather than a direct replacement for state expiration. Verkle trees have evolved over time into unified binary trees and then into partitioned binary trees. Buterin pointed out that extensions now rely on dedicated mechanisms tailored to specific high-demand use cases.

Formal verification supported by artificial intelligence has also become the core of the updated Ethereum roadmap. Recursive STARKs now span the execution, consensus, and data layers within the protocol. Buterin believes that for the first time, modern AI tools have made comprehensive formal verification possible.
