The Ethereum Foundation transfers 566.27 ETH to an anonymous address
The Ethereum Foundation has transferred 566.27 ETH from its official grant wallet to an unmarked anonymous address, a move that has attracted the attention of chain monitors. In addition, a transfer of 2.62 ETH was sent to an old wallet previously associated with South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit.
These transactions were not accompanied by any public announcement. The identity of the recipient and the specific purpose of the grant have not been disclosed, but this is not unusual for the foundation's funding model. Grants from the Ethereum Foundation default to be paid on-chain in the form of ETH, which means recipients receive funds directly through wallet addresses, which do not necessarily require public confirmation.
More targeted grant strategy
This transfer reflects a broader shift in the way the Ethereum Foundation allocates funds in the ecosystem. Its Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) has provided more than $148 million in funding to more than 900 projects within the Ethereum ecosystem. In 2025, the plan will shift from an open application model to a more proactive, demand-oriented structure, organizing funding allocation around a publicly listed list of needs and targeted solicitation plans proposed by the Ethereum Foundation teams in various fields.
The Ethereum Foundation positions itself as a resource allocator and ecosystem manager rather than a core authority on the network. The foundation operates through a combination of internal teams and external grants to support protocol research and development, developer tools, security engineering and community projects.
Transparency issues remain
Previously, transfers of funds from known foundation wallets to unmarked addresses have raised questions about accountability. These transactions come at a time when the Ethereum Foundation's financial activities are receiving continued attention. The foundation supports ecological development through grants and has long faced questions about fund management and transparency. In June 2025, the foundation launched a transparent financial policy, committing to disclose its assets, investments and operating costs quarterly and annually. Whether this latest transfer will be reflected in subsequent disclosures remains to be seen.
The grant is part of the foundation's ongoing series of strategic allocations to support next-generation decentralized infrastructure, although the specific project or team behind this particular address has not been made public.
