The Ethereum Foundation released the Platåberget public testnet to preview the Glamestead upgrade in advance.
Earlier today, the Ethereum Foundation further added to the upcoming Glamestead upgrade and announced the launch of the Platåberget public testnet. Anyone can experience upgrade content in advance on this test site without waiting for the main network to be officially launched.
The foundation emphasizes that wallets, blockchain indexers, Gas estimators and all tools that rely on fixed maximum Gas caps must act as soon as possible-because these tools will not function properly after the upgrade.
The foundation recommended EIP-8037 (introducing the state Gas dimension), EIP-2780, and EIP-8038 (for post-decomposition costing) to developers.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, the Platåberget testnet will continue to be running for at least several months.
What is the difference between Platåberget testnet?
The Platåberget test network was built specifically for Glamsterdam-upgrade and is completely different from previous test networks such as Hoodi and Sepolia. In addition, it opens access to the public and is not as restricted as early privately developed networks.
Another major difference between Platåberget and previous testnets is that it is launched based on the current mainnet state, and Glamestead's changes will take effect through a fork on August 20. In this way, operators can simulate the actual on-chain transition process rather than jumping directly into a chain that already has new rules in operation.
After that, GlamAmsterdam will go through multiple stages before finally reaching the Ethereum main network. One stage is the aggregation of community feedback and client software, which is expected to take about a month. It will then pass through the Sepolia and Hoodi test networks before being deployed to the Ethereum main network.
What changes will the Glamestead upgrade bring to Ethereum?
The Glamstam upgrade is expected to bring changes to Ethereum's two-tier architecture. The most important of these changes is the "Proponder-Builder Separation"(EIP-7732), which incorporates the block construction process into the protocol itself.
According to data from Everstake, a pledge provider on the network, about 88% of Ethereum blocks are currently assembled offline through MEV-Boost relays. But the problem is that verifiers lack a protocol-level contingency plan when a relay reviewing a transaction fails to deliver a block.
The new alternative system verifies that blocks arrive on time through on-chain builder identities, signed bids, and a new "load timeliness committee."
The second major change to Glamestead is the "block-level access list"(EIP-7928), which records each account and storage slot touched by a block, and the final status results.
EIP-7732 and EIP-7928 together laid the foundation for a plan to increase the Gas cap from 60 million to 200 million. The upgrade will also increase the maximum deployment contract size from 24 KiB to 64 KiB, and increase the initcode limit from 48 KiB to 128 KiB.
The Ethereum ecosystem is still focusing on the planned Hegotá upgrade in 2027.
