Ethereum announces public testnet Platåberget

Ethereum has announced the public Platåberget testnet, describing it as an early testing environment for network changes following the Glamsburg upgrade. In an announcement on August 17, the Ethereum Foundation said the network was planned to operate for several months before Glamestead would migrate to a longer-term test network.

The

Foundation stated that TestNet provides application developers, wallet teams, indexers, validators and builders with the opportunity to test software against expected changes in upgrades. The Glamsterdam-fork plan was implemented on Platåberget on August 20.

Gas assumptions are key test targets

The bulletin specifically warns that tools that rely on hard-coding maximum Gas limits need to be updated. According to the announcement, the proposed Gas repricing is aimed at achieving a bottom line of approximately 200 million Gas, while broader changes affect how software estimates and handles transaction costs.

The

Foundation also stated that in a test environment, creating accounts, deploying code, or writing new storage slots will be measured through a dimension separate from state Gas. It warns that ordinary ETH transfers are not always expressed with the assumption of a fixed 21,000 Gas.

Other content

The list released highlights the built-in proposer-builder separation, block-level access lists, Gas repricing, and larger contract and initcode restrictions. The foundation describes these as changes that span the consensus and execution levels.

Platåberget has a publicly available set of validators that allow users to participate in the network. The client version is still optional, and temporary container images are listed while the client team is preparing to release the version.

Next test steps

The foundation said the network is designed to expose downstream compatibility issues before the non-terminal DevNet, followed by upgrades on Sepolia and Hoodi. Mainnet activation will occur after these test phases have stabilized.

Currently, this announcement is a testnet notification, not a mainnet launch. Teams with Gas estimation, transaction construction or block production software are among the early test targets identified by the foundation.
