U.S. government transfers Alameda Research bitcoins previously seized from Binance.US

The U.S. government has transferred some of the bitcoins previously seized from Alameda Research's Binance.US account to other addresses. The deal was disclosed by blockchain analytics company Arkham, which has long tracked wallet activity involving well-known blockchains.

Transaction details

Arkham reported on August 26 that the bitcoins came from assets seized from Alameda's Binance and Binance.US accounts about three years ago. Although the transfer amount was described as "small," Arkham did not say the move meant a direct sale or the final destination of the funds.

Such transactions have become increasingly common as the government actively manages seized digital assets related to the collapse of Alameda Research and related exchange FTX. These ongoing asset reallocations are part of multiple previous seizures involving multiple cryptocurrencies and exchanges.

Broader government asset movements

In May this year, Arkham observed that approximately US$1.9 million of various Alameda Research altcoins were transferred to Coinbase Prime, involving assets including Render (RNDR), Uniswap (UNI), The Sandbox (SAND), Mask Network (MASK) and Axie Infinity (AXS).

Earlier in July, wallets belonging to the U.S. government transferred more than $288 million in seized bitcoin and Ethereum to Coinbase Prime. The funds came from multiple criminal cases and were not just related to FTX and Alameda, highlighting the government's continued efforts to deal with confiscated digital assets.

Arkham revealed that the government seized more than US$300 million in assets from Alameda Research's Binance and Binance.US accounts as part of a comprehensive confiscation plan of FTX and Alameda related assets totaling more than US$700 million. The seized assets included a large amount of Bitcoin and encapsulated Bitcoin, valued at more than $102 million at the time. These actions are just some of the billions of dollars in assets ultimately linked to the FTX and Alameda investigations.

Small Dictionary: Alameda Research is a quantitative cryptocurrency trading company previously led by Sam Bankman-Fried and has close ties to the FTX Exchange. In 2022, with the disclosure of financial misconduct and mismanagement, both of them have closed down one after another.

Legal consequences and victim compensation

FTX founder and Alameda Research executive Sam Bankman-Fried has been sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit more than $11 billion on fraud and related charges. Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan authorized the U.S. government to allocate recovered assets as compensation to victims affected by Bankman-Fried's actions.

The organized transfer and liquidation of digital assets is part of the ongoing process of fulfilling court confiscation orders. The Justice Department's Inspector General's report shows that the U.S. Marshals Service has received $627.9 million in compensation as part of the total of $11 billion, and the funds are actively distributing to eligible victims.

The Department of Justice emphasized that funding for ongoing compensation to victims comes from proceeds from asset seizures and settlements related to the FTX and Alameda investigations.
