Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson responds to controversy over the founding story of Ethereum

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson responded in an interview with The Block recently, expressing dissatisfaction with the fact that despite the establishment of an independent blockchain network over the years, the founding story of Ethereum is still being constantly questioned. Hoskinson said he had answered the same question hundreds of times and called on reporters to study the topic themselves before asking questions again. His core point is clear: he had only briefly interacted with Ethereum for about six months, but the attention this experience gained was extremely disproportionate to his subsequent achievements.

Cardano's Ten Years of Work

Hoskinson was one of the original co-founders of Ethereum and co-founded the project with Vitalik Buterin. However, he left early on in the project, co-founded Input Output Global (formerly IOHK) and launched Cardano. Cardano is a proof-of-stake blockchain positioned between Bitcoin's monetary model and Ethereum's programmable infrastructure. Hoskinson measures the results of its work by Cardano's peak valuation: the token reached a record high of $3.09 in September 2021, and its peak market value exceeded $100 billion, ranking among the top three global cryptocurrencies.

The interview was the latest in a series of public appearances by Hoskinson, who tried to turn the focus of the discussion to Cardano's own achievements. In another interview with CoinDesk on July 23, Hoskinson severely criticized Ethereum's governance model, arguing that the network lacked an on-chain pool of funds that could sustainably fund long-term development. He compared this to Cardano's approach, which funds development through an on-chain pool of funds supported by protocol-level fees.

Continuous adjustment of narrative direction

Hoskinson's dissatisfaction with The Block is consistent with his consistent coping pattern. He claims to have invested $450 million in personal money to launch the Cardano Network, and repeatedly emphasizes that this long-term investment-not his early exit from Ethereum-should be the criterion by which his career should be judged. In another recent public occasion, Hoskinson said Cardano's formal on-chain governance and ability to implement upgrades makes it better able to respond to existing technological threats such as advances in quantum computing.

Whether media opinion will shift to the narrative framework he expects remains to be seen. For now, the founding story of Ethereum emerges in almost every major interview, and Hoskinson seems increasingly difficult to accept.
