Bitcoin and cryptocurrency earnings usher in a new era: Germany plans to impose a 25% flat tax

As countries around the world continue to strengthen supervision of cryptocurrencies, tax issues have become one of the most critical issues. Recently, Germany has taken high-profile regulatory measures in this area.

As one of Europe's largest economies, Germany is preparing comprehensive regulations aimed at taxing cryptocurrency gains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. According to BlockBeats, the plan drafted by the German Ministry of Finance plans to impose a flat tax rate of 25% on cryptocurrency gains, similar to the tax treatment of stocks and other capital investments.

The tax exemption period is coming to an end

Under the current system, individual investors can enjoy tax-free treatment on the proceeds they earn from selling cryptocurrencies held for more than one year. However, the German Ministry of Finance wants to abolish this exemption clause and introduce new regulations to classify cryptocurrencies as capital gains for taxation. The new system is planned to apply to cryptocurrencies acquired on or after January 1, 2027.

The draft also retains some provisions that are beneficial to investors. The current annual tax exemption of 1,000 euros (approximately US$1,170) per year is expected to remain in effect. In addition, it is reported that the draft text also contains a clause that allows investors to use the gains and losses of investment in other securities (such as stocks) to offset the gains and losses of investment in cryptocurrencies.
