FollowingBolt teamed up with the Red Cross Society of Nigeria to train 500 drivers in first aid skills
In addition to providing travel services, Bolt, an online ride-hailing platform, is planning to provide training in first aid and Incident Response Service skills to up to 500 drivers, aiming to help them respond appropriately in roadside emergencies. According to a statement learned by Technext, the project is part of the Safety Ambassadors Programme launched by Bolt in partnership with the Nigeria Red Cross.
Fill the rescue gap and protect road safety
Bolt's drivers are spread across major cities and spend a lot of time on the roads. As a result, they are in a unique position to potentially provide immediate assistance in an accident or other emergency before professional rescue personnel arrive. The Safety Ambassador Program aims to strengthen this capability by providing the necessary knowledge and basic tools to enable drivers to respond safely and responsibly.
The program officially kicked off with a pilot training course held in Abuja. The pilot brought together 50 Bolt drivers to provide practical training in basic first aid and Incident Response Service. After the course, participating drivers received certificates of completion and first aid kits so that they could better provide support in case of road emergencies.
Given the success of the pilot project, Bolt plans to extend the program to driver partners in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Calabar, Ibadan, Benin, Kano and other cities in the next month.
Beyond the carriage: responsibility extends to the community
Speaking about the initiative, Teddy Appa-Dankyi, senior general manager of Bolt West Africa, said that the company's responsibility for safety is not limited to the experience inside the car.
"Our driver partners shuttle the roads and communities every day. Empowering them with basic First Aid and Incident Response Service skills will help them respond appropriately when encountering emergencies. Through the Safety Ambassador Program, we invest in partner drivers and empower them with practical skills that can change the situation at critical moments." he said.
Professional guidance saves lives
This First Aid and Incident Response Service training is provided by the Nigeria Red Cross Society. Drivers received practical guidance on common roadside emergencies, learned basic first aid skills, and learned the correct steps to take while waiting for professional emergency services.
Gbuemi Uba, general manager of social enterprises of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, said when evaluating the quality of training and the benefits of such projects for drivers that the mission of the Red Cross Society of Nigeria is to protect lives and reduce human suffering.
"Our collaboration with Bolt provides an opportunity to expand and standardize first aid and road safety training for drivers and passengers. When more people have the knowledge and skills to respond appropriately in emergencies, we can help save more lives on the roads of Nigeria." Uba said.
Long-term commitment to comprehensive promotion
The initiative is part of Bolt's broader commitment to enhance platform safety and provide practical knowledge and resources to driver partners to promote a safer social environment. The Abuja pilot project is the first phase of the larger plan, which Bolt plans to expand across Nigeria.
Teddy Appa-Dankyi added: "We are pleased to be working with the Nigeria Red Cross on this pilot project and look forward to expanding the project to more cities in Nigeria."
