Hardware wallet manufacturers Trezor and BitBox warn users against phishing emails disguised as emergency security notices

Recently, well-known hardware wallet manufacturers Trezor and BitBox jointly issued a warning to users to remind the public to be wary of phishing emails disguised as emergency security notices. This risk stems from a suspected breach of third-party email services.

Trezor: Email provider leaked, urging users not to click on links

On Wednesday, Trezor officially announced that its email service provider had been breached and clearly stated that the message titled "Critical Security Alert: STM32 Entropy Vulnerability" was forged. The company urges recipients not to click on any links in the email.

BitBox: The newsletter provider may be damaged, and many Bitcoin companies may be implicated.

On the same day, BitBox also issued a warning about phishing emails. The company said preliminary review showed that its news communication provider may have been compromised, adding that multiple bitcoin-related companies appeared to have been targeted through shared service providers.

Recent industry security incidents have occurred frequently

The above warning follows a series of recent security disclosures in the hardware wallet field:

  • August 13: A data breach occurred at ShipMonk, Trezor's logistics service provider, exposing the personal information of nearly 14,000 customers.
  • September 4:Trezor disclosed that the data of another 67,000 U.S. customers was affected.
  • July: BitBox confirmed that its devices were not affected by a random number generation vulnerability involving Coldcard.
  • August: BitBox released a firmware update that fixed two serious firmware vulnerabilities. No exploitation or theft of funds has been found.

During the writing of this article, media attempts were made to contact Trezor and BitBox for more details, but no response was received.
